The invitation from Dusit Thani general manager Stanley Lo for a gastronomic Philippine meal was just too intriguing to resist. The Dusit Thani Manila chefs proposed to serve what they called “The Winner’s Dinner.”
This would be a meal featuring the award-wining Dusit Thani dishes from the Philippine Culinary Cup 2019.
This special invitational dinner consisted of 10 of their award-winning Philippine dishes. The guests were an intimate group that included the Ambassadors of Austria and France, and senior executives of the hotel.
WINNERS OF THE PHILIPPINE CULINARY CUP 2019
The dishes served had won awards for the Dusit Thani Manila at the prestigious Philippine Culinary Cup (PCC) 2019.
A BEAUTIFUL DINING TABLE
We began with cocktails. Then we were led to one long table that was so beautifully laid out with linen, cutlery and Philippine spices. The motif was Philippine and the atmosphere was stylish and elegant. It was definitely a sign of the delicious things to come.
Stanley said: “It’s free seating as this is an intimate dinner.”
So I quickly found a seat next to the Ambassador of France and in front of the Ambassador of Austria, across from Stanley. What a merry party this turned out to be, discussing Travel and Life while tasting some truly delicious dishes.
AWARD-WINNING PHILIPPINE APPETIZERS
The night started out with fresh and light dishes such as the Laing empanada and Langka Dinakdakan which won gold medal under the Filipino cuisine category. This was accompanied by the Pan Seared Scallop which won a bronze medal.
FRESH TAKE ON PHILIPPINE SOUP
Then we tasted a very creative dish called Inihaw na Sinigang. This was really a modern take on a French classic. But it used locally caught Lapu-lapu fish. This retraced for Dusit Thani guests the roots of Filipino fishing culture.
COFFEE WITH RICE
Before the main course, the 3PM Rice or Coffee Rice was served. This had a twist of flavors from the north of the Philippines. This dish also won a gold medal under Filipino cuisine category and it truly was a unique dish.
The combination itself seemed highly unlikely but everything worked; and it turned out that this was the chefs’ elaborate interpretation of their childhood memories of eating a snack in the afternoon as young boys in their hometowns.
WINNING MAIN COURSE AND DESSERT
To end a most enjoyable evening, we stopped counting calories. The two desserts were so good. So we ate every morsel of the Blackberry & Pistachio Cake and Tsokolate At Turon. I especially liked the Tsokolate at Turon for that perfect deep chocolate flavour and crunch.
