We came to Puglia for sunlit days and the sparkle of the sea. At first, Gallipoli’s Old Town was not on our list. Yet one morning, with no plan and no map, we set off — and found ourselves drawn into its magic.
For two weeks, we stayed on the far side of the peninsula. Each day, our rhythm was slow and easy. We woke up to fresh orange juice and crusty bread. After breakfast, we got into the car and drove without direction. Often, we followed the wind. Sometimes, we stopped wherever curiosity pulled us.

We had booked an apartment by the sea in Santa Cesarea Terme. At first glance, the town looked like a one-road place that had seen better days. Yes, the grandeur had faded, but the architecture still charmed. Even in summer, most shops stayed closed. Only a handful of restaurants remained open, giving the town a quiet, almost forgotten air.

Nevertheless, we were happy here. It was quiet and pretty enough, with a wide promenade. Every evening, we sat outside, at a small restaurant that with four tables and only five choices of pizza. A pizza cost five euros and a bottle of wine went for about the same. We certainly enjoyed this.

ABOUT GALLIPOLI

Nevertheless, we were content here. The town felt quiet yet charming, with a wide seaside promenade. Each evening, we returned to the same tiny restaurant with only four tables. The menu offered just five kinds of pizza. Even so, it was all we needed. A pizza cost five euros, and a bottle of wine cost about the same. In the end, the simplicity made everything perfect. We savored every meal.
At one end, we discovered a small coffee shop perched on the old stone wall. “Let’s stay here a while,” I said. So, we ordered two coffees and took our seats on the bar stools. In front of us, the whitewashed houses of Gallipoli glowed in the late light. Behind them, the sun slipped lower, casting the sky in gold. Beneath us, the waves crashed against the wall, filling the air with spray and sound. Coffee never tasted better.

THE BEST HOTEL IN GALLIPOLI

Meanwhile, the Hotel Palazzo del Corso, just off the road to the Old Town, stood as the finest hotel in Gallipoli. Officially, it was a five-star property. Yet, it felt more like a luxury boutique hotel — intimate, elegant, and beautifully designed. This became my “home” during my stay in the city.
Each morning, I woke to frescoes painted across the ceiling. What a sight to open my eyes to such beauty. I never failed to whisper a quiet thank you for a wonderful life.
After that, I would head up to the rooftop terrace. There, a civilized breakfast awaited. Often, I lingered with my laptop for an hour or two, working while gazing at the marina below.

LUNCH IN GALLIPOLI
At lunchtime, we wandered toward the Old Town in search of a quaint restaurant. The plan was simple: a long, lazy, and liquid meal. After all, it feels like a crime to rush lunch in Italy — especially on holiday. Just as no one should even think of dieting here. Because, truly, a plate of pasta with a glass of wine is one of life’s great pleasures.

With lazy, lovely days like this, full of sunshine and small wonders, it was no surprise I felt reluctant to go home. Truly, I could have spent the entire summer there.
At the hotel, a seawater jacuzzi waited on the rooftop. So, each afternoon followed the same perfect rhythm: a walk, a swim, then sunset cocktails. Finally, the day ended with dinner under the stars — simple, delicious, and unforgettable.
