This weekend we found beautiful handpainted pottery at the Savaria Történelmi Karnevál in Szombathely. The carnival is an annual event organised by the city of Szombathely, which is the oldest city in Hungary.
For four days every August, the entire city transforms itself into one giant festival venue. There are concert spaces, food stalls, crafts shops and street performances.
HISTORY OF SZOMBATHELY
It’s a truly wonderful event. It highlights the history of Szombathely and pays tribute to its origins. Everyone really gets into the festival spirit too. There is music and drinking all night. Many locals and visitors walk around dressed in ancient Roman costumes.
THE CRAFTS & HANPAINTED POTTERY OF HUNGARY
We enjoyed all the events at the Szombathely carnival. But we just loved discovering the beautiful crafts of Hungary. In particular, we were very fascinated by the various kinds of pottery created by local artists.
Most of these artisans displayed their handpainted pottery in stalls all over the city. There was no one particular style. In fact, every piece was beautiful and unique. However I noticed that Hungarian artists favor flower designs.
FLORAL DESIGNS FOR POTTERY
I wish I could have brought home several favorite pieces. I wanted a floral pottery set for goulash, a palinka serving set, and a lovely bowl carved with flowers and leaves inside.
Unfortunately the pottery pieces were so heavy. So I simply took photographs of the handpainted pottery at the Szombathely carnival.
SAVARIA TORTENELMI KARNEVAL
This truly is one of the most unique summer festivals in Hungary. So if you’re planning to visit Hungary in the summer, add Szombathely to your itinerary. However, make sure to check the dates for the carnival before you go.
