Four Seasons Prague: Just Like Home

I checked in just after 11 a.m., and from that moment everyone already knew my name. From the bellman to the concierge to the staff in the lounge, each person greeted me as if I were a returning friend.

We dropped our bags, pulled on our coats, and walked toward the Charles Bridge, only minutes away. Snow fell gently on its ancient statues, and across the river, Prague Castle shimmered in white. Walking the bridge in winter felt like stepping into a fairy tale—one of those moments when Prague shows why she has captivated travelers for centuries.

As we left, the doorman smiled and called me by name. Then he said: “You’re just in time for your first afternoon tea in Prague.”

A Proper Czech Afternoon Tea

After our walk, we returned to the lobby for afternoon tea in Prague. The light outside had softened into a golden winter glow, and the piano filled the flower-lined space with warmth.

We began with steaming cups of thick hot chocolate and then let our eyes wander to the dessert trolley. Temptation won quickly. We sampled a little of everything: a deceptively simple chocolate cake laced with liquor, biscuits, pastries, and strudels. I admit—I had two slices of that chocolate cake. But my favourite was a traditional Czech Christmas cake, soaked in syrup and topped with bright icing. Festive, unusual, and unforgettable.

During my last trip, I stayed at La Esperanza Granada, a boutique estate renowned for its elegance and intimate atmosphere. Entering through the gates of the estate felt like stepping into a dream. Surrounded by verdant hills and ancient olive trees, the setting is nothing short of enchanting. Known as the “Valley of Happiness,” the Lecrin Valley is celebrated for its lush landscapes, mild climate, and vibrant wildflowers, making it a serene yet dynamic destination.

The estate’s prime location offers easy access to the majestic Sierra Nevada mountains, the cultural treasures of Granada, and the stunning Costa Tropical. Whether you’re seeking adventure or tranquility, this picturesque region has something for everyone.

La Esperanza Granada is a stunning example of Andalusian architecture, featuring whitewashed walls, terracotta tiles, and elegant arched windows framed by vibrant bougainvillea. Upon arrival, General Manager Napo and his attentive team welcomed me with a chilled glass of lemonade made from fresh lemons picked right in the courtyard—an unforgettable touch of hospitality.

Napo, who has been with La Esperanza Granada since its inception, shared fascinating stories about the hacienda’s creation. These insights added depth to my stay, enhancing my appreciation for its seamless blend of tradition and modern comfort.

La Esperanza Granada: A Luxury Hacienda with a View

I completely fell in love with my junior suite, which exuded authentic Andalusian charm. With tall wooden beams, hand-painted tiles, and thoughtfully designed interiors, it was a perfect blend of elegance and tradition.

Each morning, I sipped coffee on my private terrace, overlooking the valley’s picturesque olive groves. This terrace became my favorite retreat, offering tranquility and stunning views in complete privacy. The suite’s spacious bathroom, featuring a tiled shower and a walk-in closet, added to its luxurious appeal. It truly felt like a retreat within a retreat, with every detail thoughtfully crafted for ultimate comfort and relaxation.

The Natural Beauty of the Lecrin Valley

After breakfast, I explored the hacienda grounds. La Esperanza Granada offers beautifully landscaped gardens, lavender-lined pathways, and a private farm where guests can wander and explore.

Outside the hacienda, the valley’s charm continued. I visited the nearby villages of Saleres, Albunuelas and Melegis. Each one has its own charm, but all had cobbled streets, whitewashed buildings, and tapas bars that offered a taste of local life. In the bars, I met some locals and also some expatriates who had relocated here. They shared stories of their families and traditions, and I began to understand why the Lecrin Valley inspires such love from those who live here.

Afternoons at La Esperanza Granada’s infinity pool offered a perfect way to relax. Set against the mountains, the pool overlooked the valley, and I often found myself mesmerized by the scenery. The fragrant air, alive with citrus and lavender, added to the experience. I savored each moment as the warm sun and tranquil surroundings washed over me.

Eating Well in Andalucia

La Esperanza’s dining experience became another highlight of my stay. Each meal felt like a celebration of Andalusian flavors and traditions. One evening, I enjoyed dinner on the terrace, cooked by the private chef and served to me exactly as the sun was setting over the valley.

Dinner began with Spanish tapas: olives, cheeses, and cured meats. This was followed by a savory mille-feuile of cheese, liver pate and figs drizzled with honey. The main course, a black squid ink paella made right in front of me, tasted exquisite. A rich red wine from a nearby winery perfectly complemented the meal.

Reflections on a Luxury Hacienda

Before I realized it, it was time to go. Time had indeed flew by — to use a cliche. As I packed my bags, I felt a deep gratitude for my time at La Esperanza Granada. This estate offers far more than luxurious accommodations; it gives guests a chance to experience Andalusia’s beauty in a most authentic and serene way.

La Esperanza Granada, in the heart of the Lecrin Valley, redefines what it means to escape. I found a true retreat here, where each day offered beauty, tranquility, and inspiration. The idea to purchase a property in Spain came out the blue. It was the height of the COVID pandemic and I was onboard a Japan Airlines flight about to land at Narita Airport in 20 minutes. The virus was ravaging much of Europe and there was no vaccine in sight.

As soon as I reached my home in Tokyo, I went online even before unpacking my bags. I googled “properties for sale in Spain” and made a shortlist of the estates I fancied. I wanted either a beautiful country house or a unique hotel. Luckily, I found a property in the pristine Lecrin Valley in Southern Spain, just 30 minutes from Granada and 90 minutes from Malaga. This easily met these two criteria.

ABOUT THE LECRIN VALLEY

The Lecrin Valley lies amidst some of the most protected lands in the country. It has a strict plot-to-building ratio regulation. However, the former owners somehow received permission to build what is now the largest structure in the entire area.

It sits on a hill amidst five hectares of organic land with the “most beautiful view of Lecrin.” They built a small hotel with a lovely main residence for themselves.

LEAP OF FAITH

Instinctively, I knew that I would never find a similar property elsewhere. My next step then became something of a legend in the luxury hotel industry. Since borders were closed, I bought the property sight unseen. Then, in the first months I renovated most of it remotely via several thousand Whatsapp messages. Today we are a proud member of the L.V.X. Collection of Preferred Hotels and Resorts. We are also now considered one of the best hotels in Granada.

OF LUCK AND MADNESS

But let me backtrack to that fateful day in August 2020 when I purchased the property. I entrusted the transaction to a Granada lawyer I had never met and the official turnover of the keys to Pablo, a Spaniard I’d spoken three sentences to at a cocktail party in Manila a year before.

Pablo came from the region of Asturias, which is 882 kilometers away from Granada at the exact other end of Spain. He made the nine-hour drive on my behalf. which was incredibly lucky for me, as I knew no one else in Granada, or in the entire region of Andalucia for that matter. In purchasing this property on whim, you see, I’d basically thrown a dart on the map of Spain and this was where Fate led me.

This is a crazy story especially with COVID-19 thrown in, but it is exactly what happened. In fact, a journalist from the National Geographic Traveler stayed with us recently and listened wide-eyed to my narrative. She then wrote a glowing review with the title: “A hotel born out of madness.”

HOW TO OPEN A HOTEL

The property itself has good bones and the views and experience of nature here can never be understated. However, the process of transforming a country house starting to show its age into a luxury retreat worthy of belonging to one of the most prestigious hotel groups in the world amidst the pandemic required a succession of miracles. Fortunately, these were never in short supply.

It also needed a huge appetite for risk and the kind of positive mindset that’s practically set in stone – two things deeply embedded in my DNA. As my close friends will confirm, when I set out to do something, I have always jumped right in with gusto, eyes on the goal and with little thought for the downside. The word “impossible” does not exist in my vocabulary.

So one door after another simply opened with ease. My acquaintance Pablo coaxed his best friend Napo to also travel from Asturias to join him, and Napo has not left the property since Day 1. He is now the general manger of La Esperanza Granada.

In the beautiful and ancient town of Santiago de Compostela in Spain, we stayed in the Cardinal Suite of the Hostal dos Reis Catolicos, as it is known in Galician. In Spanish, it is called the Hostal Reyes Catolicos. This is the best hotel in Santiago de Compostela. It is also reportedly one of the oldest hotels in the world.

ABOUT THE HOSTAL DOS REIS CATOLICOS

With its vaulted ceilings and fine antiques, the Hostal dos Reis Catolicos is the most elegant hotel as well. It is one of only two five-star parador in Spain. However, the draw for me is its history and its best location right on the town square next to the Cathedral of Santiago de Compostela.

THE PARADORES OF SPAIN

A stay in one of the suites is not cheap, but it is worth every euro. Experiencing this historic hotel, a member of the Paradores of Spain, is one of the highlights of visiting Santiago de Compostela. So, yes, please cut down on your restaurant budget or shopping budget on your holiday in Spain. Save up for a stay at the Hostal Dos Reis Catolicos. You must eat in their fine dining restaurant, too, as it is truly lovely and the food is excellent.

HOSPITAL TURNED PILIGRIM HOTEL

The Hostal Dos Reis Catolicos was once a hospital designed with great fervor and attention to details by Queen Isabela, the Catholic Queen of Spain. She designed the hotel together with her favorite architect. If you like design and aesthetics, this simple and graceful building built in the Galician Renaissance style. Filled with medieval period antiques and art, it will just take your breath away.

Queen Isabela is also known for having conquered the Alhambra and the beautiful city of Granada, by the way.

I just loved walking around this hotel as it’s a maze of interconnected buildings and you never know what you will find at the end of a corridor. In fact, I happily got lost several times in this hotel.

THE INTERIORS OF THE HOSTAL REYES CATOLICOS

The interiors of the Hostal Reyes Catolicos are nothing over the top, in terms of design. The interiors are consistent with the atmosphere of this former hospital turned luxury hotel in this pilgrim town.

Everythings is in very good taste and you feel a peace and calmness simply because of its design. The hotel is full of lovely courtyards. Meanwhile, most of the rooms are designed around the courtyards but they look out onto the city.

Except for the main entrance, the Hostal de los Reyes Catholicos is not open to the public. So I’m posting photos to show you the beauty of simplicity in this ancient must-stay hotel.

It’s a hotel from another time, and it’s been beautifully preserved. I honestly can’t think of anywhere else you should stay on a visit to Santiago de Compostela. The experience of staying at the Hostal dos Reis Catolicos is a must.

ABOUT THE CARDINAL SUITE

Meanwhile, the Cardinal Suite we stayed in is the most extraordinary suite in the city. This suite is known for its interiors and its unique hanging balcony. From the balcony, you can enjoy a lovely view and sunset.

There is no other hotel room in Santiago de Compostela with a hanging winter garden. I loved sitting here because we could see the sunset. It was wonderful for morning coffee before breakfast as well.

Yes, it was all 15th century in the suite but the bathroom was a complete suprise. It was a 21st century makeover with a glassed in power shower set-up for two and a very nice bathtub. I was floored by this high-tech bathroom in this very old-fashioned suite. Talk about a perfect combination of history, luxury, elegance and convenience.

Pope John XXIII was just one of the many VVIP guests who reportedly stayed in this same suite at the Hostal de los Reis Catolicos along with countless other VIPs. So I was half expecting a ghost to appear during our stay in this 500-year-old hotel room. Thankfully it was a perfectly peaceful night and the next day we woke up to another beautiful day in Spain.

This opulent retreat, chosen the Best New Hotel in the World for 2023, was seamlessly put together from three port area buildings — including what was once Istanbul’s shipping and cruise terminal — plus an entirely new building.

From many of its premium rooms and suites, it offers unparalleled 180-degree views of an extraordinary panorama: the majestic Bosphorus with the bridges in the distance, the enchanting Asian Side, and the iconic silhouette of the historic district of Sultanahmet.

WHAT TO SEE IN ISTANBUL

The luxury traveler may take such views for granted, thinking that many good hotels in this city will have the same. However, those of us who know Istanbul very well understand that such a remarkable trio of views from one’s in-room couch is practically unheard of elsewhere. There is always a trade-off. Furthermore, you have almost no choices if you wish to be within shouting distance of the boats plying the Bosphorus.

THE MAGIC OF HAVING IT ALL

However, The Peninsula Istanbul seems to have defied all logic and laws of physics vis-a-vis Istanbul. It has managed to bring together under four roofs and one incredibly large underground spa, everything a fussy traveler might wish in an Istanbul hotel. It is even walking distance to the Old Town while remaining stylishly far enough away from it.

FOUR BUILDINGS, EACH WITH A STORY

Each building has a different ambiance as well as unique interiors. Three are from the early 20th century while one is an entirely new building. But very cleverly, the designers have installed glass walkways to connect the buildings and kept the feeling of the original interiors as much as possible so that you are aware of the transition. They have also installed bronze plaques on the floors at the entrance that tell you the name of the building and exactly how old it is.

THE SUITE LIFE

I stayed in the new building, which initially felt disappointing — who does not want to stay in a heritage building in Istanbul, after all — until I entered my suite with a corner enclosed in glass that instantly became the best place to be in the city on a beautiful day. And even on a cloudy or rainy one. So now this building is my favorite.

Typically of the new Peninsula hotels, this suite reeked of sophistication, refinement and technological ease. Yes, someone had taken the time here to make sure guests would not need a manual or to call the front desk in the middle of night because they did not know which button to push to turn off the foyer lights or the reading lamp.

Everything was easy and effortless here, and the views from every floor-to-ceiling window are just jawdropping. What a treat it was to see the outlines of the Topkapi and the Ayasofya, while watching the boats go by, over a room service breakfast every morning. The Bosphorus, a vital waterway steeped in history, stretches out majestically within shouting distance, providing an ever-changing tableau of maritime activity.

A SUITE FOR ALL SEASONS

If there is a perfect way to start the day in Istanbul — or anywhere in this part of the world perhaps — this is it. But the joys of this suite do not end here. In fact, they just begin. As the day unfolds, the suite transforms into a front-row seat to the mesmerizing dance of colors on the rooftops of one of the word’s most beautiful cities. And it lasts throughout the day until sunset.

The warm hues of the sinking sun bathe Sultanahmet’s domes and minarets in a golden glow, casting a spellbinding aura over the ancient peninsula. The transition from day to night is a spectacle in itself, with the city’s lights shimmering like a constellation, creating an enchanting atmosphere that I never got tired of, during my week in Istanbul. A living canvas exists around you, changing with each moment so that you are transfixed.

MORE ABOUT INSIDE

Meanwhile, the interiors are meticulously designed. The designers chose a comfortable contemporary feel, opting for a harmonious fusion of modern elegance and timeless Turkish aesthetics. The color palette is tastefully curated, with muted tones accentuating the natural light that floods through the expansive windows, framing the breathtaking vistas beyond.

THE PERKS OF THE SUITE LIFE

Being a new build allowed the architects and designers to create the kind of spacious sanctuary of comfort and indulgence that is perfectly aligned with their idea of a beautiful Istanbul suite. The living space is adorned with plush furnishings, carefully curated art pieces, and modern amenities. The bedroom, a sanctuary within a sanctuary, beckons with luxurious linens and an ambiance conducive to restful nights.

THE DRESSING ROOM

And let’s not forget the walk-in dressing room, which has become a Peninsula Hotel trademark. I could have happily lived in this corner alone.

My suite’s walk-in dressing room was as big as the guest room in most other hotels in this built-up city. It had a proper dressing room and three open wardrobes. Meanwhile, one side opened to a marble bathroom of about the same size. — and this was the real luxury in a suite with this word stamped all over it. Adorned in marble and equipped with gold fixtures, it is a spa-like retreat that provides a sanctuary for rejuvenation.

A REAL BALCONY

And wait. There’s more. A private balcony offers an alfresco haven to savor morning coffee while enjoying the water views.

THE PENINSULA ISTANBUL SERVICE

As guests step into the world of The Peninsula Istanbul, they are welcomed with an impeccable sense of service. If you stay a few days, the doorman remembers your name and the concierge inquires about your visit to the Spice Bazaar (Egyptian Bazaar) upon your return. The world’s best hotel for 2023 is not very big at all. Tucked into a discrete but ritzy neighborhood in the hills surrounding Lake Como, not far from the estates of George Clooney and Richard Branson, it was once the home of a banker who I was told lived there all alone with his wife and a handful of staff.

Today it is a 23-key jewel of a hotel and it’s full of life, thanks to the vision of third-generation Lake Como hotelier Valentina de Santis whose family also owns the very popular Grand Hotel in Tremezzo. Buoyed by the success of their lakeside property, which is full almost every day that it is open, the de Santis family took the plunge and purchased the private property that has now become the famous Passalaccqua.

TOTAL MAKEOVER

Over years of restoration and renovation, and with it a careful curation of antiques and decor for a glamorous but lived-in look, I heard they spent a fortune to create a jewel out of a building that was falling into decay and badly needing repairs. Its saving glory was its decent width spanning the lake frontage — perfect for a small luxury villa — and the fact that it actually had a view of Lake Como.

Who would have thought that this would still be possible in 2023? But, yes, this estate was up for grabs and it had frontage, location and also a proper gate and driveway.

Entering Passalacqua for the first time is like opening a storybook. When I visited, it had just opened but it had not yet won the top hotel award. So it was more a secret passed around among insiders, who whispered about the beautiful small new luxury hotel that just opened in Lake Como.

WELCOME TO THE CLUB

So it was not yet on everyone’s lips at that time — this was just July 2023 — but already it had the feel of a private club of influencers mixing with the rich and famous. You could tell the influencers apart because they dressed better than everyone else and walked around with selfie sticks, of course.

As for the really rich and famous, most of those I bumped into looked like they were really on holiday from their real lives. Think linen shirts, cotton sundresses and lots of sunscreen. Unlike in the larger hotels with grand entrances for all to enter, there are no paparazzi or celebrity spotters here — or at least none that make it through the closed gates.

The interiors are all about heavy textures, dark paneling, lots of Chinoiserie, and even more art in the form of prints, paintings and photographs wherever you will find a wall.

The main entrance is the brightest part of the hotel. It’s straight out of a royal palace, with two floor high ceilings and a very lovely double staircase lined with flowers and giant blue-and-white porcelain jars.

IT’S ALL ABOUT THE DETAILS

Interestingly, the rest of the public areas are mostly one small room after another, each as cozy as the last one. With windows looking out onto the front gardens, they are the perfect — and I must say perfectly decorated to replicate an aristocrat’s tasteful home — shady places to hide from the afternoon sun with a good book, if you are the type to do so.

The bar, too, is made up of two small rooms. In one room, a family can comfortably enjoy afternoon tea or pre-dinner drinks. Meanwhile, the main bar itself is more of a cozy corner with a counter and bar stools, and again art and paraphernalia everywhere to make you feel like you are a guest in someone’s summer home.

SMILES ALL AROUND

Aside from its overall loveliness, the best part about Passalacqua is its staff. Everyone is friendly and smiling, and nothing — absolutely nothing — is too much trouble for anyone. So wherever you are on this property, you will feel welcomed and cared for in the best possible way. And this is really the perfect set-up because you will want to spend as much time as you can in the lounge, the terraces and the gardens.

My personal favorite was champagne and canapés at sunset while sitting on bright yellow cushions on the garden stairs facing the lake. It was the most wonderful place to relax and think about one’s luck at being in the world’s best hotel that almost doesn’t feel like a hotel at all.

To tell you the truth, The One Hotel in Barcelona seems like quite an ordinary building from the outside. It’s just one block away from the famous Paseig de Gracia boulevard, lined with 19th century modernist style mansions and the best of upscale retailers. It’s also minutes away from Casa Batlo and Casa Mila, two of Gaudi’s best known architectural masterpieces.

In contrast to the stylish exterior flair of its neighbors in the Eixample district, The One seems underwhelming at first sight with its plain facade — there are no colorful tiles or wrought iron balconies here — and streamlined entrance. In fact, a business contact who met me in the lobby to take me to dinner asked me the very same question I had asked myself upon arrival: “I know it’s a five star grand luxe hotel. But is it really nice?”

INNER BEAUTY IN A HOTEL

The answer is a definite yes. The One may be understated from the outside, but inside it is all comfort, good design and luxury. My corner junior suite was a haven of light and space, and most importantly, of good taste. I had to force myself to leave my room to go sightseeing because sitting in bed with a good book — there is a coffee table book on Barcelona on the night table — and a view of the city from four windows seemed like an excellent way to spend the day.

A LAYOUT TO TALK ABOUT

The layout of my suite made for a good conversation at dinner too. For a junior suite, the foyer is way more spacious than most, which is wonderful for luxury travelers who arrive with a lot of luggage. However, most interestingly, you open the door and the first thing you see is the vanity table and sink, which are separate from the shower room and the bathroom. It’s part of the foyer and a necessary visual as you walk into the living room area and bedroom.

In one sense, this is perfect and practical because the traveler on holiday does appreciate the extra space that is not usually available in other hotel bathrooms. So I personally liked the idea of it, especially as the sink area is aesthetically pleasing to the eye with gold fixtures, grey marble and a large mirror that further adds depth to the area.

ANATOMY OF A JUNIOR SUITE

Meanwhile, the living room area and bedroom area are among the best I have seen in Barcelona, for a junior suite. The design is all calm neutrals with a sense of airiness and light — it’s the kind of room everyone will like regardless of style preferences. Furthermore, as always, the devil is in the details — to use a cliche. It had two large flat screen televisions, a beautiful artwork as a headboard, and high tech but simple wiring for lights and curtains that didn’t need an hour to figure out.

The latter is more important than you think, too. In spite of practically living in hotel suites for most of the year, and therefore quite used to hotel room wirings and systems, I have still recently encountered rooms with way too many buttons and switches. I can confirm that it is extremely annoying to be ready to sleep and to be unable to turn off the in-room bar light or the mirror light.

BREAKFAST TO REMEMBER

Further brownie points for this hotel relate to breakfast, which again is quite unlike others. Food is served just off the lobby in a rather simple space as far as luxury hotels go. And there is no lavish breakfast buffet either. Instead, guests are seated in this restaurant — and also in the lobby when there is an overflow — and asked to order from a menu. You can order what you want and in any combination, and the menu is quite appetizing and creatively worded so that it’s tempting to order everything.

For every morning of my stay, I chose a typical pan con tomato made ever so perfectly as only Catalans can do. The bread is hollowed out and crusty on the outside, and topped with fresh slices of Jamon iberico, drizzled with olive oil. I did not expect a simple breakfast worthy of being called a feast, but this is exactly what it was. In fact, breakfast was so deliciously addictive that I ordered two heaping plates of these every morning — calories all but forgotten.

There were other items on the breakfast menu too. Standard breakfast fare like yoghurt, fruits, eggs and pastry baskets. However this pan con tomate stole my heart.

Speaking of my heart, I would stay here again in a heartbeat. In fact, we’re already booking some of our Travelife Magazine readers at The One Barcelona for a food trip to the Catalunya in the spring of 2023.

One lovely summer morning to head for the Beau Rivage Palace in Lausanne. We were in the spa town of Evian-les-Bains in France, just across Lake Geneva. It was so unusually bright that day that I had to stop the car by the ridge for a look at Lausanne in Switzerland, directly across the lake.

Lausanne was an easy two hour drive away, along. The route is magnificent as you have the lake on one side and the mountains on the other. In between, you drive through some of the prettiest towns in Europe.

GRAND TOUR OF SWITZERLAND

Following the well-trodden route of English aristocrats and Russian nobility on their respective Grand Tours of Switzerland over a hundred years ago, we were doing a three week road trip around Switzerland. One of the highlights of this trip was a long weekend in Lausanne, at the 18th century Beau Rivage Palace. This is one of the grandest palace hotels in Switzerland, if not in the world.

This had long been on my travel bucket list and finally we found ourselves at the entrance. This institution of a hotel is blessed with fine architectural features. It also has four hectares of spacious manicured grounds and an enviable frontage on Lake Geneva with views of the French Alps in the distance.

HOME TO HISTORY

For 150 years the Beau Rivage Palace Lausanne has hosted kings and queens, world leaders and tastemakers seeking a home away from their own luxurious homes.

The hotel’s ground floor corridor is where all the evidence quietly is. Unfortunately, it is not a pathway many guests will notice unless they decide to take a narrow winding staircase from the lobby down to the coffee shop or to the lake.

However we did exactly this one evening. And this is how we discovered the hotel’s Hall of Fame. It’s lined with signed black and white photographs of many of the good and the great who have laid their heads down here. It’s literally a long walk through history.

Since this hotel opened its doors in 1861, everyone who has been anyone has stayed here when passing through Lausanne. These include Victor Hugo, Coco Chanel and Nelson Mandela.

CHARLIE CHAPLIN IN SWITZERLAND

Perhaps the most interesting of its innumerable distinguished guests was also one of its longest. The legendary actor and producer Charlie Chaplin set up temporary lodgings at the Beau Rivage Palace Lausanne upon his arrival in Switzerland with his family.

This was after a high-profile departure from the United States in connection with Senator Joseph McCarthy’s witchhunt for Communist supporters. Mr. Chaplin ended up loving this hotel and this area so much that he eventually chose a large villa nearby as his final home.

THE BEST SERVICE IN LAUSANNE

These days, many guests choose to stay at the Beau Rivage Palace to experience its legendary hospitality. This is always exemplary and yet never intrusive. Indeed, the Beau Rivage Palace staff observe everything and see nothing. More importantly, the front desk and concierge team so impressed me as having a solution for practically any distress — save perhaps for a broken heart.

For the latter, however, a long weekend in one of the bright new suites facing Lake Geneva will certainly go a long way towards easing a heartbreak. This is the kind of hotel where you can literally leave your problems at the front door and feel like everything in the world will be fine. Or solved for you.

A SUITE FOR ALL SEASONS

We booked a junior suite for our stay. This is of course generally nicer than a regular hotel room. Nevertheless it’s at the bottom of the rung in terms of the hierarchies of suites at grand hotels. But quite frankly, it left me breathless as soon as I entered. This was among the loveliest junior suites I’d ever stayed in, in a lifetime of checking into the world’s best hotels.

The 75-square meter room was light, bright and airy. It could certainly lift anyone’s spirits even on the dreariest of days. It had a mirrored breakfast nook and bar that was a tiny room in itself. This room, unique to the junior suite on the second floor, jutted out of one corner. It had glass doors that opened up to a private terrace with a view of Lake Geneva.

DESIGNED BY PIERRE YVES ROCHON

Each guest room was created by French designer Pierre Yves Rochon in slightly varying styles of contemporary. Our suite was modern and colored in white and pale pastels. It had a fireplace on one side and an ultra-modern workstation on the other.

The workstation in white wood and glass was refreshed daily with flowers. Above it was a shelf filled with interesting books on Swiss architecture. There was also a book on Anne Sophie Pic, who incidentally runs the hotel’s flagship formal dining restaurant.

THE ROOM WITHIN A ROOM

The piece de resistance of this suite was a mirrored walk-in closet. It was bigger than an average Swiss hotel room and I loved it. It was massive, even for our large suitcases and an assortment of smaller ones. I reveled in the luxury of having enough closet space in Europe.

In fact, with four large cabinets, luggage tables at the end and a proper mirrored dressing table, it had enough places for everything. I could actually hang all the clothes I’d brought, arrange shoes neatly in pull- out glass drawers at the bottom and place my summer hats on the top shelf. Yes, this dressing room was literally fit for a queen. As was the rest of the room.
