The most beautiful house in Hungary

This beautiful house in Hungary made me say “wow”

The Frequent Flier Christine Cunanan

Not too long ago, we visited the artist town of Szentendre. This is where we had dinner at what I thought was the most beautiful house in Hungary.

Szentendre itself is often described as one of the most beautiful towns in Hungary. It’s only 30 minutes away by train or car from Budapest so it is a popular sightseeing destination for tourists from Budapest.

WHAT TO DO IN SZENTENDRE

Szentendre is truly a pretty town with cobblestone roads and quaint and colourful buildings. It’s also very old, dating back to the Roman times. In some places, you can still see remnants of Roman structures, in fact.

There are also so many things to see in Szentendre. There are dozens of museums and galleries, along with nice restaurants. Most of my favorite restaurants are within a minute’s walk from the town square.

Szentendre may be small but it’s also wonderful just to spend time along the Danube River, walking amidst the nature in Szentendre. This part of Hungary has the best bicycle lanes too. So we decided to stay for a few days in a house right on the town square.

A BEAUTIFUL HOUSE IN HUNGARY

During our stay, we were invited by a local family to have dinner at their lovely home right along the Danube River. As soon as I entered the house, I immediately thought to myself: “This is probably the most beautiful house in Hungary.”

The husband had designed it himself. It wasn’t a palace but it was a simple and modern home in exceedingly good taste. Furthermore, it was located in the best place imaginable, set right by the water. It had a very large garden set amidst ancient trees.

The overall theme was contemporary with touches of Hungarian and Japanese. Inside this home with glass walls facing the river, we found paintings by the local artists of Szentendre.

I wish I could post photos here but the privacy of the owners is involved. So I will just have to describe this beautiful house.

SUMMER IN HUNGARY

Immediately I had house envy. I wanted to also live in a beautiful house in Hungary just like this — or at least to buy a home here I could spend every summer in. Summer in Hungary is simply spectacular. The weather is perfect, the sun is always shining and everyone is outdoors.

ABOUT HUNGARIAN HOSPITALITY

But my envy over this beautiful house in Hungary immediately turned to gratitude and happiness. The Hungarian family that invited us to dinner offered us warm hospitality and lots of smiles.

We took off our shoes and drank wine out in the garden as it was an amazingly fine evening and we could see the stars. Then we sat down to a family dinner on the terrace. The mother made lecco, which is a paprika dish. Then the children served the food in a very impressive formal way.

UNITED NATIONS AROUND A TABLE

There we were, four nationalities and seven people in one table, and it felt like home. Appearances truly are deceiving because people have more in common than they think. Where there is warmth and kindness, there really is no opportunity to create borders between people.
