<p>In Hokkaido for a winter break recently, we booked Villa 688 of HakuVillas, undisputedly the best place to stay in Niseko. It&#8217;s minutes from the ski slopes and also just around the corner from the main streets of Niseko, with its stores and restaurants.</p>

<p>However, excellent as this is, location is not the biggest attraction of this building with only five units, that someone has described as &#8220;the first place you should book if you win the lottery.&#8221; Frankly, the villas are over the top and in a good way. </p>

<h2 class="has-text-align-center wp-block-heading">WHAT IT&#8217;S LIKE AT THE TOP</h2>

<figure class="wp-block-gallery columns-2 is-cropped wp-block-gallery-1 is-layout-flex wp-block-gallery-is-layout-flex"><ul class="blocks-gallery-grid"><li class="blocks-gallery-item"><figure><img decoding="async" width="480" height="640" src="https://www.travelifemagazine.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/05/IMG_7960-1.jpg" alt="HakuVillas in Travelife Magazine" data-id="42948" data-full-url="https://www.travelifemagazine.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/05/IMG_7960-1.jpg" data-link="https://www.travelifemagazine.com/?attachment_id=42948" class="wp-image-42948" srcset="https://www.travelifemagazine.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/05/IMG_7960-1.jpg 480w, https://www.travelifemagazine.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/05/IMG_7960-1-225x300.jpg 225w" sizes="(max-width: 480px) 100vw, 480px" /></figure></li><li class="blocks-gallery-item"><figure><img decoding="async" width="768" height="1024" src="https://www.travelifemagazine.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/05/IMG_2952-1-768x1024.jpg" alt="" data-id="42947" data-full-url="https://www.travelifemagazine.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/05/IMG_2952-1-rotated.jpg" data-link="https://www.travelifemagazine.com/?attachment_id=42947" class="wp-image-42947" srcset="https://www.travelifemagazine.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/05/IMG_2952-1-768x1024.jpg 768w, https://www.travelifemagazine.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/05/IMG_2952-1-225x300.jpg 225w, https://www.travelifemagazine.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/05/IMG_2952-1-1152x1536.jpg 1152w, https://www.travelifemagazine.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/05/IMG_2952-1-770x1027.jpg 770w, https://www.travelifemagazine.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/05/IMG_2952-1-1400x1867.jpg 1400w, https://www.travelifemagazine.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/05/IMG_2952-1-rotated.jpg 1512w" sizes="(max-width: 768px) 100vw, 768px" /></figure></li></ul></figure>

<p>The H2 Group who run HakuVillas have kept ten steps ahead of even the fussiest clients, and so they have thought of every convenience and comfort. There is something for everyone to like and remember; and for me, it was probably the Eames chair in the living room, by the fireplace and with a view of Mount Yotei, and the fact that I could blast all my favorite songs on the speakers in every room I happened to be in.</p>

<h2 class="has-text-align-center wp-block-heading">ABOUT HAKUVILLAS PENTHOUSE</h2>

<figure class="wp-block-image size-large"><img decoding="async" width="1024" height="768" src="https://www.travelifemagazine.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/05/IMG_2878-1024x768.jpg" alt="Dining room of HakuVillas 888" class="wp-image-42950" srcset="https://www.travelifemagazine.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/05/IMG_2878-1024x768.jpg 1024w, https://www.travelifemagazine.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/05/IMG_2878-300x225.jpg 300w, https://www.travelifemagazine.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/05/IMG_2878-768x576.jpg 768w, https://www.travelifemagazine.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/05/IMG_2878-1536x1152.jpg 1536w, https://www.travelifemagazine.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/05/IMG_2878-770x578.jpg 770w, https://www.travelifemagazine.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/05/IMG_2878-1400x1050.jpg 1400w, https://www.travelifemagazine.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/05/IMG_2878.jpg 2016w" sizes="(max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px" /><figcaption>Dining room of HakuVillas 888</figcaption></figure>

<p>The crown jewel of HakuVillas is Villa 888, which is spread over three floors and it comfortably sleeps sixteen. Frankly, it&#8217;s the unit that guests who have &#8220;been there and done that&#8221; should choose because there is truly nothing like it so far in Niseko. Or in Hokkaido, for that matter. It comes with its own man cave, sauna, and two spa treatment rooms. </p>

<div class="wp-block-image"><figure class="aligncenter size-full is-resized"><a href="https://www.travelifemagazine.com"><img decoding="async" src="https://www.travelifemagazine.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/03/GCP-200226-824.jpeg" alt="HakuVillas in Hokkaido, the best place to stay in Niseko" class="wp-image-42622" width="815" height="544" srcset="https://www.travelifemagazine.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/03/GCP-200226-824.jpeg 640w, https://www.travelifemagazine.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/03/GCP-200226-824-300x200.jpeg 300w, https://www.travelifemagazine.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/03/GCP-200226-824-360x240.jpeg 360w" sizes="(max-width: 815px) 100vw, 815px" /></a><figcaption>The outdoor hot springs pool of HakuVillas 888</figcaption></figure></div>

<p>The outdoor hot springs pool, created with rocks on the massive terrace with a full-on view of Mount Yotei, will make anyone&#8217;s jaw drop. But then so will the price. Last I checked, this penthouse unit was going for 3,000,000 yen per night. So it&#8217;s great for the big family trip &#8212; or the holiday with nannies and bodyguards in tow as there&#8217;s room for everyone &#8212; but it&#8217;s obviously way too big for a family of four or six.</p>

<div class="wp-block-image"><figure class="aligncenter size-full is-resized"><a href="https://www.travelifemagazine.com"><img decoding="async" src="https://www.travelifemagazine.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/05/IMG_7886.jpg" alt="The outdoor hotsprings onsen pool of HakuVillas 688 in Niseko" class="wp-image-42953" width="770" height="562" srcset="https://www.travelifemagazine.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/05/IMG_7886.jpg 640w, https://www.travelifemagazine.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/05/IMG_7886-300x219.jpg 300w" sizes="(max-width: 770px) 100vw, 770px" /></a><figcaption>The outdoor hotsprings pool of HakuVillas 688</figcaption></figure></div>

<p>Thus the other equally enticing options below heaven, and in this case three: Villas 588, 688 and 788, all alike and all furnished in a mixture of contemporary country chic with touches of Asian details and cutting edge design. They&#8217;re really mini versions of the penthouse. So regardless of which villa you choose, no expense was obviously spared in creating these, so expect the very best. </p>

<p><strong>GOODIES &amp; TREATS</strong>: Unlimited supply of caramel popcorn and Snickers, plus freshly-baked chocolate chip cookies and lovely canapés for apres ski. The private butlers bring you tea and coffee whenever you wish, too.</p>

<p><strong>EXTRA PERK</strong>: The Eames chair and a massage chair in the living room</p>

<div class="wp-block-image"><figure class="aligncenter size-full is-resized"><a href="https://www.travelifemagazine.com"><img decoding="async" src="https://www.travelifemagazine.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/05/IMG_7885-1.jpg" alt="Living room with a view of Mount Yotei at HakuVillas 688" class="wp-image-42956" width="769" height="577" srcset="https://www.travelifemagazine.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/05/IMG_7885-1.jpg 640w, https://www.travelifemagazine.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/05/IMG_7885-1-300x225.jpg 300w" sizes="(max-width: 769px) 100vw, 769px" /></a><figcaption>Living room with a view of Mount Yotei at HakuVillas 688</figcaption></figure></div>

<p><strong>RESTAURANT</strong>: There&#8217;s an intimate steak house on-site. But you can also get your private chef to whip up his specialties. HakuVillas tries to use locally sourced ingredients for its meals, so expect the best Shiraoi beef, free-range eggs from a farm nearby, and yoghurt and bread from the local deli. We highly recommend the Hokkaido beef steaks.</p>

<p><strong>BREAKFAST</strong>: You can have a different breakfast everyday. The chef will happily cook you a Japanese breakfast, a Western breakfast and even a Chinese breakfast. If you fancy spaghetti carbonara at 9 AM, I&#8217;m sure they will do this too.</p>

<div class="wp-block-image"><figure class="aligncenter size-full"><a href="https://www.travelifemagazine.com"><img decoding="async" width="640" height="480" src="https://www.travelifemagazine.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/05/IMG_8077.jpg" alt="Western breakfast in Hokkaido at HakuVillas" class="wp-image-42967" srcset="https://www.travelifemagazine.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/05/IMG_8077.jpg 640w, https://www.travelifemagazine.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/05/IMG_8077-300x225.jpg 300w" sizes="(max-width: 640px) 100vw, 640px" /></a><figcaption>Western breakfast at HakuVillas </figcaption></figure></div>

<p><strong>SERVICE</strong>: A great and energetic international team of chefs, concierge and butlers to pamper you. On our stay, our chef was from Hong Kong, our driver was from Eastern Europe, one of our butlers was from the Philippines and our hospitality team coordinator was a bilingual Japanese who grew up in Borobudur. He taught us how to play shuffleboard.</p>

<p><strong>WIFI</strong>: Complimentary, available everywhere, and super high speed</p>

<p><strong>POOL / SPA / FITNESS</strong>: There&#8217;s no pool &#8212; but who needs one in Hokkaido when you&#8217;ve got the hot springs? We had our own private hot springs with a view of Mount Yotei on the terrace, carved out of rocks and capable of seating eight. There&#8217;s also a gym, an indoor driving range and spa treatment rooms on the ground floor.</p>

<figure class="wp-block-gallery columns-2 is-cropped wp-block-gallery-5 is-layout-flex wp-block-gallery-is-layout-flex"><ul class="blocks-gallery-grid"><li class="blocks-gallery-item"><figure><img decoding="async" width="1024" height="768" src="https://www.travelifemagazine.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/05/IMG_2925-1024x768.jpg" alt="HakuVillas in Niseko has its own indoor golf driving range" data-id="42960" data-full-url="https://www.travelifemagazine.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/05/IMG_2925.jpg" data-link="https://www.travelifemagazine.com/?attachment_id=42960" class="wp-image-42960" srcset="https://www.travelifemagazine.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/05/IMG_2925-1024x768.jpg 1024w, https://www.travelifemagazine.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/05/IMG_2925-300x225.jpg 300w, https://www.travelifemagazine.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/05/IMG_2925-768x576.jpg 768w, https://www.travelifemagazine.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/05/IMG_2925-1536x1152.jpg 1536w, https://www.travelifemagazine.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/05/IMG_2925-770x578.jpg 770w, https://www.travelifemagazine.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/05/IMG_2925-1400x1050.jpg 1400w, https://www.travelifemagazine.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/05/IMG_2925.jpg 2016w" sizes="(max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px" /></figure></li><li class="blocks-gallery-item"><figure><img decoding="async" width="640" height="480" src="https://www.travelifemagazine.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/05/IMG_7683.jpg" alt="The gym at HakuVillas in Niseko" data-id="42963" data-full-url="https://www.travelifemagazine.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/05/IMG_7683.jpg" data-link="https://www.travelifemagazine.com/?attachment_id=42963" class="wp-image-42963" srcset="https://www.travelifemagazine.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/05/IMG_7683.jpg 640w, https://www.travelifemagazine.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/05/IMG_7683-300x225.jpg 300w" sizes="(max-width: 640px) 100vw, 640px" /></figure></li></ul></figure>

<p><strong>WHAT TO DO</strong>: When you check in here, you&#8217;ll just want to sit around enjoying the views and the service all day. But should you manage to pull yourself out of this place, the ski slopes of Mount Annapurna await, just a two-minute drive away. We also recommend snowboarding and the snowmobile. The concierge can arrange everything in advance.</p>

<div class="wp-block-image"><figure class="aligncenter size-full"><a href="https://www.travelifemagazine.com"><img decoding="async" width="640" height="479" src="https://www.travelifemagazine.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/05/IMG_7814.jpg" alt="That's Mount Annapurna in the background, minutes away from HakuVillas" class="wp-image-42972" srcset="https://www.travelifemagazine.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/05/IMG_7814.jpg 640w, https://www.travelifemagazine.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/05/IMG_7814-300x225.jpg 300w" sizes="(max-width: 640px) 100vw, 640px" /></a><figcaption>That&#8217;s Mount Annapurna in the background, minutes away from HakuVillas</figcaption></figure></div>

<p><strong>VIBE</strong>: Casual but elegant. The type of place Masters of the Universe would book for a birthday weekend. So bring your Moncler winter wear.</p>

<p><strong>PRICE LEVELS</strong>: Pretty stratospheric for Hokkaido. One night costs 1.5 million Japanese yen. However prior to the pandemic, HakuVillas had lots of takers and regular guests, and the management says it does not discount. So this should give you an indication of what the UHNW market thinks about these prices.</p>

<div class="wp-block-image"><figure class="aligncenter size-full"><a href="https://www.travelifemagazine.com"><img decoding="async" width="640" height="480" src="https://www.travelifemagazine.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/05/IMG_7853.jpg" alt="The living room of HakuVillas 688" class="wp-image-42977" srcset="https://www.travelifemagazine.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/05/IMG_7853.jpg 640w, https://www.travelifemagazine.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/05/IMG_7853-300x225.jpg 300w" sizes="(max-width: 640px) 100vw, 640px" /></a><figcaption>The living room of HakuVillas 688</figcaption></figure></div>

<p><strong>WHEN TO GO</strong>: Winter is peak season just because Niseko has some of the best powder snow in Asia. But all year round is beautiful, especially for those into nature and the great outdoors.</p>

<p><strong>SATISFACTION LEVEL</strong>: What can we say? We&#8217;re already planning a return trip next winter.</p>

<p>“How big is this suite?” I asked Michael Chen,&nbsp;Co-CEO&nbsp;of&nbsp;H2 Group, the company that&nbsp;developed&nbsp;and manages&nbsp;HakuVillas, lodging of choice for the world’s high flyers in the ski resort town of Niseko. I had just checked into&nbsp;HakuVillas&nbsp;for a snow holiday and he was giving me the grand tour of the&nbsp;super&nbsp;penthouse suite which has eight bedrooms spread over three floors.</p>

<p>We were standing in the entrance foyer of&nbsp;Villa&nbsp;888, just outside the private elevator entrance. To the right was the private dining room and kitchen and to the left was the modern Scandi-style living room. Somehow it reminded me of Iceland although I don’t think Iceland has a hotel suite as glamorous as this anywhere on the island.</p>

<div class="wp-block-image"><figure class="aligncenter size-full is-resized"><a href="https://www.travelifemagazine.com"><img decoding="async" src="https://www.travelifemagazine.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/03/GCP-191217-494.jpeg" alt="Haku Villas is one of the best hotels in Niseko" class="wp-image-42627" width="769" height="513" srcset="https://www.travelifemagazine.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/03/GCP-191217-494.jpeg 640w, https://www.travelifemagazine.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/03/GCP-191217-494-300x200.jpeg 300w, https://www.travelifemagazine.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/03/GCP-191217-494-360x240.jpeg 360w" sizes="(max-width: 769px) 100vw, 769px" /></a><figcaption>Haku Villas is one of the best hotels in Niseko</figcaption></figure></div>

<p>The living room has a massive television and fireplace, a white Eames chair&nbsp;and the kind of curvilinear sofa you expect to see at a celebrity’s&nbsp;home that’s both&nbsp;cozy&nbsp;and jaw dropping. But this one comes with double views of Mount&nbsp;Yotei&nbsp;and Mount&nbsp;Annapuri, which are Niseko’s million yen views. You can’t miss the floor-to-ceiling wine cellar either, stocked with some of the world’s most name-droppable wines.</p>

<div class="wp-block-image"><figure class="aligncenter size-full is-resized"><a href="https://www.travelifemagazine.com"><img decoding="async" src="https://www.travelifemagazine.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/03/GCP-191217-491-1.jpeg" alt="The living room has views of Mount Yotei on one side and Mount Annapurna on the other side" class="wp-image-42629" width="765" height="510" srcset="https://www.travelifemagazine.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/03/GCP-191217-491-1.jpeg 640w, https://www.travelifemagazine.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/03/GCP-191217-491-1-300x200.jpeg 300w, https://www.travelifemagazine.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/03/GCP-191217-491-1-360x240.jpeg 360w" sizes="(max-width: 765px) 100vw, 765px" /></a><figcaption>The living room has views of Mount Yotei on one side and Mount Annapurna on the other side</figcaption></figure></div>

<p>Meanwhile, in front of us was a massive outdoor hot springpool&nbsp;(a proper&nbsp;onsen&nbsp;by Japanese standards)&nbsp;on the terrace. It was&nbsp;built&nbsp;with natural&nbsp;volcanic&nbsp;rocks and&nbsp;has a full-on view of Mount&nbsp;Yotei. It was large enough to have anin-pool cocktail party, which I suspect some guests do. </p>

<p>It’s perfect for entertaining all the other ski buddies who have descended upon Niseko for the full house ski seasons of Christmas holidays and winter school term breaks. And It’s certainly the best place to spend New Year’s Eve. One guest booked the entire building for New Year and had everyone dining in the penthouse and then on the terrace at midnight, with full view of the fireworks from the&nbsp;Grand&nbsp;Hirafu&nbsp;slopes.</p>

<div class="wp-block-image"><figure class="aligncenter size-full is-resized"><a href="https://www.travelifemagazine.com"><img decoding="async" src="https://www.travelifemagazine.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/03/GCP-200226-824.jpeg" alt="HakuVillas is the best villa to stay in Niseko" class="wp-image-42622" width="753" height="502" srcset="https://www.travelifemagazine.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/03/GCP-200226-824.jpeg 640w, https://www.travelifemagazine.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/03/GCP-200226-824-300x200.jpeg 300w, https://www.travelifemagazine.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/03/GCP-200226-824-360x240.jpeg 360w" sizes="(max-width: 753px) 100vw, 753px" /></a><figcaption>The view of Mount Yotei from the hot springs pool of Villa 888 of HakuVillas</figcaption></figure></div>

<p>“This is 600 square meters,” Michael replied, and actually it felt larger than that. I actually got lost on the lower floor, somewhere between the bedrooms, the sauna, the two spa treatment rooms, and the nanny rooms. This is the wellness floor vis-a-vis the entertaining floor and the&nbsp;top&nbsp;floor for the master of the house&nbsp;with&nbsp;it’s&nbsp;Mancave hideaway.</p>

<h2 class="has-text-align-center wp-block-heading">ABOUT HAKUVILLAS IN NISEKO</h2>

<div class="wp-block-image"><figure class="aligncenter size-full is-resized"><a href="https://www.travelifemagazine.com"><img decoding="async" src="https://www.travelifemagazine.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/03/IMG_7708.jpg" alt="Master bedroom of penthouse unit of Haku Villas" class="wp-image-42579" width="776" height="582" srcset="https://www.travelifemagazine.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/03/IMG_7708.jpg 640w, https://www.travelifemagazine.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/03/IMG_7708-300x225.jpg 300w" sizes="(max-width: 776px) 100vw, 776px" /></a><figcaption>Master bedroom of penthouse unit of Haku Villas</figcaption></figure></div>

<p>Since it opened,&nbsp;HakuVillas&nbsp;has been the talk of Hokkaido’s hospitality industry. Everyone holds it in awe both for the boldness of its interiors and of its pricing. There are not many seven-figure fully-serviced&nbsp;villas&nbsp;in these parts, after all.</p>

<h2 class="has-text-align-center wp-block-heading">LUXURY IN NISEKO</h2>

<div class="wp-block-image"><figure class="aligncenter size-full"><img decoding="async" width="1500" height="500" src="https://www.travelifemagazine.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/03/888_onsen_dining-1500x500-1.jpg" alt="Penthouse Suite 888 of Haku Villas in Niseko" class="wp-image-42592" srcset="https://www.travelifemagazine.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/03/888_onsen_dining-1500x500-1.jpg 1500w, https://www.travelifemagazine.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/03/888_onsen_dining-1500x500-1-300x100.jpg 300w, https://www.travelifemagazine.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/03/888_onsen_dining-1500x500-1-1024x341.jpg 1024w, https://www.travelifemagazine.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/03/888_onsen_dining-1500x500-1-768x256.jpg 768w, https://www.travelifemagazine.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/03/888_onsen_dining-1500x500-1-770x257.jpg 770w, https://www.travelifemagazine.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/03/888_onsen_dining-1500x500-1-1400x467.jpg 1400w" sizes="(max-width: 1500px) 100vw, 1500px" /><figcaption>Penthouse Suite 888 of Haku Villas in Niseko</figcaption></figure></div>

<p>Considering it only has four&nbsp;villas&nbsp;and it’s just under&nbsp;fifteen months&nbsp;old, the fact that&nbsp;HakuVillas&nbsp;has been a trending topic in the last 12 to 18 months is quite an impressive achievement. But here’s a short backgrounder. Until some years back, Niseko was basically an Australian backpacker’s paradise and “luxury” was not in the vocabulary. The fairly recent arrival of high-end hotel companies has quickly changed the scene and dramatically so, and&nbsp;HakuVillas&nbsp;of the H2 Group&nbsp;is right at the top of the mountain.</p>

<p>The gap between the kind of foreign tourists arriving in Niseko — skiing is a very expensive sport after all — and the quality of lodgings then was not lost on astute businessmen like Michael. Thus, the Haku concept of hospitality was born.</p>

<div class="wp-block-image"><figure class="aligncenter size-full is-resized"><a href="https://www.travelifemagazine.com"><img decoding="async" src="https://www.travelifemagazine.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/03/IMG_7717.jpg" alt="Sauna of Penthouse Unit 888 of Haku Villas" class="wp-image-42583" width="767" height="575" srcset="https://www.travelifemagazine.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/03/IMG_7717.jpg 640w, https://www.travelifemagazine.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/03/IMG_7717-300x225.jpg 300w" sizes="(max-width: 767px) 100vw, 767px" /></a><figcaption>Sauna of Penthouse Unit 888 of Haku Villas</figcaption></figure></div>

<p>The&nbsp;villas&nbsp;are true gems designed to impress&nbsp;guests and holiday makers&nbsp;who have already been there and done that. Each one ends with the lucky 88 — so you have 588, 688, 788 and the prized 888. The units come with their own team of private butlers, chefs, and drivers. So practically every wish is granted if you can afford this level of pampering. Prices for the&nbsp;full-floor units, which are 300 square meters plus&nbsp;its own private, outdoor&nbsp;hot springs pools on the terraces, start at JPY 1.6 million yen (approximately US$16,000) per night. They basically mirror the penthouse suite minus two floors, including the coveted wellness facilities. Pre-pandemic, these were very much in demand.</p>

<div class="wp-block-image"><figure class="aligncenter size-full is-resized"><a href="https://www.travelifemagazine.com"><img decoding="async" src="https://www.travelifemagazine.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/03/GCP-200226-666-Edit.jpeg" alt="One of the bedrooms of HakuVillas in Niseko" class="wp-image-42623" width="769" height="513" srcset="https://www.travelifemagazine.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/03/GCP-200226-666-Edit.jpeg 640w, https://www.travelifemagazine.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/03/GCP-200226-666-Edit-300x200.jpeg 300w, https://www.travelifemagazine.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/03/GCP-200226-666-Edit-360x240.jpeg 360w" sizes="(max-width: 769px) 100vw, 769px" /></a><figcaption>One of the bedrooms of HakuVillas in Niseko</figcaption></figure></div>

<figure class="wp-block-pullquote"><blockquote><p>&#8220;We had a very busy winter season for our first year. </p><p>And I’m&nbsp;confident&nbsp;we&nbsp;will be&nbsp;even busier when COVID is over.&#8221; &nbsp;</p><cite>MICHAEL CHEN, CO-CEO of H2 GROup</cite></blockquote></figure>

<div class="wp-block-image"><figure class="aligncenter size-full is-resized"><a href="https://www.travelifemagazine.com/haku-villas-best-hotels-in-niseko/"><img decoding="async" src="https://www.travelifemagazine.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/03/IMG_7707.jpg" alt="Michael Chen, Co-CEO of H2 Group which owns and manages Haku Villas" class="wp-image-42588" width="775" height="599" srcset="https://www.travelifemagazine.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/03/IMG_7707.jpg 640w, https://www.travelifemagazine.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/03/IMG_7707-300x232.jpg 300w" sizes="(max-width: 775px) 100vw, 775px" /></a><figcaption>Michael Chen, Co-CEO of H2 Group which owns and manages Haku Villas</figcaption></figure></div>

<p>The penthouse we were standing in is an entirely different story. In fact, it’s in another league altogether in terms of size and price. And when I say another league, I don’t just mean the island of Hokkaido. This penthouse, which Michael reckons is the largest hotel penthouse unit in Japan, rents out for JPY 3 million yen (approximately US$30,000) a night. Even in expensive Japan, this is pricey by anyone’s standards.</p>

<p>“We may be the most expensive in Hokkaido but&nbsp;our service and experience curated for our guests is second to&nbsp;none,” Michael added.&nbsp;Indeed, many people seem to think the high price tag is worth it, especially with the stylish high tech interiors and the full-time staff on-hand for everything from&nbsp;a hot chocolate greeting you at the end of a ski run on the slopes, to a&nbsp;specially planned dinner menu paired with the perfect&nbsp;bottle of wine, in the comfort of the expansive dining area inside&nbsp;your own villa, looking into the night skiers on the slopes.</p>

<div class="wp-block-image"><figure class="aligncenter size-full is-resized"><a href="https://www.travelifemagazine.com"><img decoding="async" src="https://www.travelifemagazine.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/03/IMG_7727-1.jpg" alt="Dining room of Penthouse Unit 888 of Haku Villas" class="wp-image-42582" width="769" height="577" srcset="https://www.travelifemagazine.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/03/IMG_7727-1.jpg 640w, https://www.travelifemagazine.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/03/IMG_7727-1-300x225.jpg 300w" sizes="(max-width: 769px) 100vw, 769px" /></a><figcaption>Dining room of Penthouse Unit 888 of Haku Villas</figcaption></figure></div>

<p>Michael explains: “It sounds like a lot at first. But then guests do the math. They see all the perks that come with the stay, including the&nbsp;daily meals and&nbsp;private butlers and chef&nbsp;team that tends to their every need. This is when they realize that the prices are quite reasonable on a per-bedroom basis.”</p>

<h2 class="has-text-align-center wp-block-heading">IT&#8217;S ALL ABOUT THE DETAILS</h2>

<div class="wp-block-image"><figure class="aligncenter size-full is-resized"><img decoding="async" src="https://www.travelifemagazine.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/03/IMG_7736.jpg" alt="This bar counter is perfect for apres-ski cocktails at Haku Villas" class="wp-image-42580" width="769" height="576" srcset="https://www.travelifemagazine.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/03/IMG_7736.jpg 640w, https://www.travelifemagazine.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/03/IMG_7736-300x225.jpg 300w" sizes="(max-width: 769px) 100vw, 769px" /><figcaption>This bar counter is perfect for apres-ski cocktails at Haku Villas</figcaption></figure></div>

<p>No detail is overlooked at&nbsp;<a href="https://hakulife.com/hakuvillas/%20/t%20_blank"><strong>HakuVillas</strong></a><strong>.</strong>&nbsp;There’s a made-to-order shuffle board and poker table in the Mancave, big jars of edible treats in strategic areas, and thermal blankets to&nbsp;cozy&nbsp;up with on snowy nights. And, yes, you can curate your&nbsp;favourite&nbsp;music&nbsp;in each&nbsp;room&nbsp;and living space&nbsp;at&nbsp;HakuVillas&nbsp;— and what a convenience this is, I realized. I could choose Frank Sinatra for a steak dinner in the dining room and&nbsp;Ariana Grande for a morning at the hot springs tub just before heading for the slopes.</p>

<div class="wp-block-image"><figure class="aligncenter size-full is-resized"><img decoding="async" src="https://www.travelifemagazine.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/03/GCP-200227-169.jpeg" alt="Outdoor hot springs bath of HakuVilla Penthouse 888" class="wp-image-42626" width="768" height="512" srcset="https://www.travelifemagazine.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/03/GCP-200227-169.jpeg 640w, https://www.travelifemagazine.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/03/GCP-200227-169-300x200.jpeg 300w, https://www.travelifemagazine.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/03/GCP-200227-169-360x240.jpeg 360w" sizes="(max-width: 768px) 100vw, 768px" /><figcaption>Outdoor hot springs bath of HakuVilla Penthouse 888</figcaption></figure></div>

<p>Pre-pandemic, for instance, one gentleman from Hong Kong booked the penthouse and the three smaller units for three weeks. Then he still needed more space so he booked a stand-alone home, Hakuchōzan,&nbsp;that&nbsp;H2 Groupleases for JPY 1.7&nbsp;million yen (approximately US$17,000) per night. Incidentally, this fully serviced home set the standard for upmarket lodgings in Hokkaido. By all accounts he had a wonderful time and was planning to return. I’m guessing this will be one of his first destinations as soon as Japan reopens its borders.</p>
