On the trail of the Sound of Music
Around Salzburg, cinema blends seamlessly into everyday life. Visitors stroll across the gravel promenades of Mirabell Palace toward the Pegasus Fountain from the famous “Do-Re-Mi” sequence. Visitors can relive the magic with an audio tour visiting filming sites around the city,
Meanwhile, across the water, the lakeside terrace of Schloss Leopoldskron frames one of the most recognizable vistas in cinematic history. Flanked by ornate stone seahorses and looking out over the tranquil waters, this 18th-century rococo palace served as the iconic exterior for the Von Trapp family villa.

Nearby, the historic Salzburg Marionette Theatre continues the cinematic tribute, staging adaptations of the film classic on select evenings.

Salzburg’s Music Legacy
While Hollywood cemented Salzburg’s cinematic fame with The Sound of Music, the city’s true musical heartbeat began two centuries earlier with Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart. Long before Maria von Trapp skipped through Mirabell Gardens, a young Mozart was strolling the very same paths, transforming this baroque alpine enclave into the birthplace of classical genius.
Today, that legacy anchors Salzburg’s cultural identity. Visitors still flock to the canary-yellow townhouse on Getreidegasse in the old town where the child prodigy was born. Here, his childhood violin and original manuscripts are on display.

The Great Hall at the Mozarteum Foundation anchors Salzburg’s premier classical calendar. Hosting over 100 concerts annually. Its crown jewel is January’s Mozart Week, celebrating the maestro’s birthday. Throughout July and August, the hall hosts the prestigious Salzburg Festival, staging beloved morning Mozart Matinees, virtuosic piano recitals, and intimate chamber evenings.
