<div style="height:20px" aria-hidden="true" class="wp-block-spacer"></div>

<p>Tokaj has a world-famous reputation among <strong>serious wine lovers</strong>. The region of Tokaj is renowned for sweet wines. Its vineyards are spread out across the<strong> foothills of the Zemplén Mountains</strong>. Many of these vineyards were established as early as the 12th century. But the population is tiny so it seems that everyone knows everyone.</p>

<div style="height:20px" aria-hidden="true" class="wp-block-spacer"></div>

<div class="wp-block-image"><figure class="aligncenter size-large is-resized"><img decoding="async" src="https://www.travelifemagazine.com/wp-content/uploads/IMG_9300-824x1024.jpg" alt="The finest sweet wine in Hungary is the Tokaji Aszú 1999 6 puttonyos created by the Imperial winery of Tokaj-Hétszőlő in Tokaj" class="wp-image-36261" width="412" height="512" srcset="https://www.travelifemagazine.com/wp-content/uploads/IMG_9300-824x1024.jpg 824w, https://www.travelifemagazine.com/wp-content/uploads/IMG_9300-241x300.jpg 241w, https://www.travelifemagazine.com/wp-content/uploads/IMG_9300-768x954.jpg 768w, https://www.travelifemagazine.com/wp-content/uploads/IMG_9300.jpg 878w" sizes="(max-width: 412px) 100vw, 412px" /></figure></div>

<div style="height:20px" aria-hidden="true" class="wp-block-spacer"></div>

<p>However, many beautiful things come in small sizes, and Tokaj is definitely one of these. It has one main street and one main square, but these are among <strong>the most beautiful town squares in Central Europe</strong>. Its population too may be modest in size, but international visitors pay homage to this mecca for sweet wines. The<strong> Tokaji Aszú</strong> is known as the most delectable of sweet nectars around the world.</p>

<div style="height:20px" aria-hidden="true" class="wp-block-spacer"></div>

<div class="wp-block-image"><figure class="aligncenter size-large"><img decoding="async" width="900" height="675" src="https://www.travelifemagazine.com/wp-content/uploads/IMG_0441.jpg" alt="The finest sweet wine in Hungary is the Tokaji Aszú 1999 6 puttonyos created by the Imperial winery of Tokaj-Hétszőlő in Tokaj" class="wp-image-35646" srcset="https://www.travelifemagazine.com/wp-content/uploads/IMG_0441.jpg 900w, https://www.travelifemagazine.com/wp-content/uploads/IMG_0441-300x225.jpg 300w, https://www.travelifemagazine.com/wp-content/uploads/IMG_0441-768x576.jpg 768w" sizes="(max-width: 900px) 100vw, 900px" /><figcaption>Tokaji <i>A</i>szu 1999 Harslevelu by Tokaj-Hétszőlő </figcaption></figure></div>

<div style="height:20px" aria-hidden="true" class="wp-block-spacer"></div>

<hr class="wp-block-separator"/>

<h2 class="wp-block-heading">Wine Tour in Tokaj</h2>

<p>Tokaj has many excellent wineries within the city. And you will find wineries of all predilections; from the prestigious<strong> Imperial winery of Tokaj-Hétszőlő</strong>, to boutique wineries no one outside of Tokaj has ever heard of. </p>

<div style="height:20px" aria-hidden="true" class="wp-block-spacer"></div>

<div class="wp-block-image"><figure class="aligncenter size-large"><img decoding="async" width="1024" height="505" src="https://www.travelifemagazine.com/wp-content/uploads/79526406_10221651412098387_1775710381210075136_o-1024x505.jpg" alt="The finest sweet wine in Hungary is the Tokaji Aszú 1999 6 puttonyos created by the Imperial winery of Tokaj-Hétszőlő in Tokaj" class="wp-image-36259" srcset="https://www.travelifemagazine.com/wp-content/uploads/79526406_10221651412098387_1775710381210075136_o-1024x505.jpg 1024w, https://www.travelifemagazine.com/wp-content/uploads/79526406_10221651412098387_1775710381210075136_o-300x148.jpg 300w, https://www.travelifemagazine.com/wp-content/uploads/79526406_10221651412098387_1775710381210075136_o-768x378.jpg 768w, https://www.travelifemagazine.com/wp-content/uploads/79526406_10221651412098387_1775710381210075136_o.jpg 1027w" sizes="(max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px" /></figure></div>

<div style="height:20px" aria-hidden="true" class="wp-block-spacer"></div>

<p>In fact, <strong>György Posta, Mayor of the city of Tokaj</strong>, himself confessed to owning a small winery simply for the love of grape. His wines are for his own consumption, which perhaps makes the wine even so much better.</p>

<div style="height:20px" aria-hidden="true" class="wp-block-spacer"></div>

<div class="wp-block-image"><figure class="aligncenter size-large"><img decoding="async" width="640" height="360" src="https://www.travelifemagazine.com/wp-content/uploads/IMG_0401.jpg" alt="The finest sweet wine in Hungary is created by the Imperial winery of Tokaj-Hétszőlő in Tokaj. <div style="height:20px" aria-hidden="true" class="wp-block-spacer"></div>

<h2 class="wp-block-heading">THE BEST WINERIES TO VISIT IN TOKAJ</h2>

<p>Our time in Tokaj was short so we focused only on the best experiences. This meant heading straight for Tokaj- Hétszőlő for a tour of its historic cellars and an afternoon of wine tasting.</p>

<p>Perhaps partly for this link with history, <strong>Tokaj-Hétszőlő </strong>has resisted the trend towards modern and minimalist that so many other wineries favor these days; so its cave is pitch dark save for sets of antique candelabras that left me awestruck. </p>

<div style="height:20px" aria-hidden="true" class="wp-block-spacer"></div>

<div class="wp-block-image"><figure class="aligncenter size-large"><img decoding="async" width="640" height="525" src="https://www.travelifemagazine.com/wp-content/uploads/IMG_0411.jpg" alt="The finest sweet wine in Hungary is the Tokaji Aszú 1999 6 puttonyos created by the Imperial winery of Tokaj-Hétszőlő in Tokaj" class="wp-image-36263" srcset="https://www.travelifemagazine.com/wp-content/uploads/IMG_0411.jpg 640w, https://www.travelifemagazine.com/wp-content/uploads/IMG_0411-300x246.jpg 300w" sizes="(max-width: 640px) 100vw, 640px" /></figure></div>

<div style="height:20px" aria-hidden="true" class="wp-block-spacer"></div>

<p>Fortunately, the wine we drank was as impressive as its surroundings. We taste five bottles, including the <strong>2004 Tokaji Aszú</strong>, and this was the <strong>six puttonyos Tokaji Aszú</strong> version in front of us.</p>

<blockquote class="wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow"><p>It was the perfect dessert wine after such a heavy meal, and I was in raptures. So Katherine, our guide, smiled and said: “The harslevelu is wonderful, isn’t it? And the 2004 really is beautiful to drink now.”</p></blockquote>

<h2 class="wp-block-heading">Ranking the Sweet Wines of Tokaj</h2>

<p>Hungary employs a puttonyos-based ranking to rate the sweetness of its wines and serious Tokaji lovers consider six puttonyos the top, five very decent, four drinkable, and three worth tasting at least once. There are also <strong>Tokaji Aszú wines</strong> that don’t employ this ranking system. However, <strong>wineries like <a href="https://www.visittokaj.com/Tokaj-Hetszolo-Wine-Estate">Tokaji Hétszőlő</a></strong> take sweetness and their puttonyos very seriously.</p>

<div style="height:20px" aria-hidden="true" class="wp-block-spacer"></div>

<figure class="wp-block-image size-large"><img decoding="async" width="640" height="480" src="https://www.travelifemagazine.com/wp-content/uploads/IMG_0420.jpg" alt="The finest sweet wine in Hungary is created by the Imperial winery of Tokaj-Hétszőlő in Tokaj. It's the 1999 Hetzolo Tokaji Aszu." class="wp-image-36264" srcset="https://www.travelifemagazine.com/wp-content/uploads/IMG_0420.jpg 640w, https://www.travelifemagazine.com/wp-content/uploads/IMG_0420-300x225.jpg 300w" sizes="(max-width: 640px) 100vw, 640px" /></figure>

<div style="height:20px" aria-hidden="true" class="wp-block-spacer"></div>

<p>The<strong> 2004 Tokaji Aszú </strong>we drank that afternoon used a single varietal grape called hárslevelű, found only in Hungary. The wine was like liquid gold, particularly after the delicious lunch we had at the LaBor Bistro. </p>

<div style="height:20px" aria-hidden="true" class="wp-block-spacer"></div>

<figure class="wp-block-image is-resized size-large"><img decoding="async" src="https://www.travelifemagazine.com/wp-content/uploads/6C21822F-E45E-443E-A65B-F3DE2908CC39-819x1024.jpg" alt="At Le Bistrot Restaurant, the best restaurant in Tokaj, Hungary " class="wp-image-36265" width="614" height="768" srcset="https://www.travelifemagazine.com/wp-content/uploads/6C21822F-E45E-443E-A65B-F3DE2908CC39-819x1024.jpg 819w, https://www.travelifemagazine.com/wp-content/uploads/6C21822F-E45E-443E-A65B-F3DE2908CC39-240x300.jpg 240w, https://www.travelifemagazine.com/wp-content/uploads/6C21822F-E45E-443E-A65B-F3DE2908CC39-768x960.jpg 768w, https://www.travelifemagazine.com/wp-content/uploads/6C21822F-E45E-443E-A65B-F3DE2908CC39.jpg 848w" sizes="(max-width: 614px) 100vw, 614px" /></figure>

<div style="height:20px" aria-hidden="true" class="wp-block-spacer"></div>

<p>It was the perfect dessert drink after such a heavy meal, and I was in raptures. So Katherine, our guide, smiled and said: “The hars is wonderful, isn’t it? And the 2004 really is beautiful to drink now.”</p>

<div style="height:20px" aria-hidden="true" class="wp-block-spacer"></div>

<hr class="wp-block-separator"/>

<div style="height:20px" aria-hidden="true" class="wp-block-spacer"></div>

<p style="text-align:center"><p class="has-text-align-center"><strong><a href="https://www.travelifemagazine.com/traditional-coffee-ceremony-ethiopia-yrgalem/">ETHIOPIA : HOW DRINKING COFFEE THRICE A DAY BRINGS HAPPINESS</a></strong></p></p>

<div style="height:20px" aria-hidden="true" class="wp-block-spacer"></div>

<hr class="wp-block-separator"/>

<div style="height:20px" aria-hidden="true" class="wp-block-spacer"></div>

<p>Everyone fondly refers to this homegrown<strong> grape called harslevelu </strong>as the hars. Its final form prior to being a sweet wine is a <strong>state of noble rot with wrinkled skin</strong> and discolored surface. </p>

<p>However, Tokaji Aszú drinkers revere this with passion. The taste makes up for everything, you see. It’s sweet, strong, and spunky, but also smooth and elegant.</p>

<div style="height:20px" aria-hidden="true" class="wp-block-spacer"></div>

<figure class="wp-block-image size-large"><img decoding="async" width="648" height="851" src="https://www.travelifemagazine.com/wp-content/uploads/IMG_0479.jpg" alt="The finest sweet wine in Hungary is the Tokaji Aszú 1999 6 puttonyos created by the Imperial winery of Tokaj-Hétszőlő in Tokaj" class="wp-image-35645" srcset="https://www.travelifemagazine.com/wp-content/uploads/IMG_0479.jpg 648w, https://www.travelifemagazine.com/wp-content/uploads/IMG_0479-228x300.jpg 228w" sizes="(max-width: 648px) 100vw, 648px" /><figcaption><em>Tokaji Aszú</em></figcaption></figure>

<div style="height:20px" aria-hidden="true" class="wp-block-spacer"></div>

<p>And this is when Katherine ever so casually mentioned the kind of offer I simply can never resist. She said: “Lots of people buy cases from us and then they store it here until they’re ready to drink their wines. They like the idea of <strong>buying Tokaji sweet wine </strong>at the source and we store wines for free if they buy at least two cases from us.”</p>

<div style="height:20px" aria-hidden="true" class="wp-block-spacer"></div>

<div class="wp-block-image"><figure class="aligncenter size-large is-resized"><img decoding="async" src="https://www.travelifemagazine.com/wp-content/uploads/79462218_10221651411018360_3883990147552772096_o-779x1024.jpg" alt="The finest sweet wine in Hungary is the Tokaji Aszú 1999 6 puttonyos created by the Imperial winery of Tokaj-Hétszőlő in Tokaj" class="wp-image-36266" width="390" height="512" srcset="https://www.travelifemagazine.com/wp-content/uploads/79462218_10221651411018360_3883990147552772096_o-779x1024.jpg 779w, https://www.travelifemagazine.com/wp-content/uploads/79462218_10221651411018360_3883990147552772096_o-228x300.jpg 228w, https://www.travelifemagazine.com/wp-content/uploads/79462218_10221651411018360_3883990147552772096_o-768x1009.jpg 768w, https://www.travelifemagazine.com/wp-content/uploads/79462218_10221651411018360_3883990147552772096_o.jpg 1125w" sizes="(max-width: 390px) 100vw, 390px" /></figure></div>

<div style="height:20px" aria-hidden="true" class="wp-block-spacer"></div>

<p>“Which is the<strong> best Tokaji Aszú</strong> you have now?” I asked. After hearing all the stories, particularly the one of the king crowned in the cellar, I had my heart set on buying four cases for storage in their ancient cellars. This almost felt like buying a piece of Tokaj itself, after all. So the romantic in me leapt for my credit card. However, if I was going to do this, I wanted only the very best.</p>

<p>I assumed over-inquisitive travelers always asked this to Katherine — most people want know which is the best, after all — but this did not seem to be the case. </p>

<p>In fact, the answer took a bit of research on her part. “Let me ask our team,” she said with a smile.</p>

<h2 class="wp-block-heading">The best Tokaji Aszú </h2>

<div style="height:20px" aria-hidden="true" class="wp-block-spacer"></div>

<div class="wp-block-image"><figure class="aligncenter size-large"><img decoding="async" width="1024" height="745" src="https://www.travelifemagazine.com/wp-content/uploads/IMG_9301-1024x745.jpg" alt="The finest sweet wine in Hungary is the Tokaji Aszú 1999 6 puttonyos created by the Imperial winery of Tokaj-Hétszőlő in Tokaj" class="wp-image-36267" srcset="https://www.travelifemagazine.com/wp-content/uploads/IMG_9301-1024x745.jpg 1024w, https://www.travelifemagazine.com/wp-content/uploads/IMG_9301-300x218.jpg 300w, https://www.travelifemagazine.com/wp-content/uploads/IMG_9301-768x559.jpg 768w, https://www.travelifemagazine.com/wp-content/uploads/IMG_9301.jpg 1124w" sizes="(max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px" /><figcaption>With the team from the imperial winery of Tokaj-Hétszőlő in Tokaj,<br>including Gergely Makai, the chief winemaker.</figcaption></figure></div>

<hr class="wp-block-separator"/>

<div style="height:20px" aria-hidden="true" class="wp-block-spacer"></div>

<p>The consensus at the winery that day, including that of Gergely Makai, the chief wine maker of Hétszőlő, was that the <strong><a href="http://www.vivino.com">Tokaji Aszú 6 puttonyos from 1999</a></strong> was one of the best so far. For one thing, <strong>1999 was a spectacular year for Aszú wines</strong> and Hétszőlő actually made three kinds of Aszú in the 6 puttonyos level. </p>

<div style="height:20px" aria-hidden="true" class="wp-block-spacer"></div>

<hr class="wp-block-separator"/>

<div style="height:20px" aria-hidden="true" class="wp-block-spacer"></div>

<p style="text-align:center"><p class="has-text-align-center">RELATED CONTENT<strong> : <a href="https://www.travelifemagazine.com/hunting-in-hungary/">A SHOOTING WEEKEND IN NORTHERN HUNGARY </a></strong></p></p>

<div style="height:20px" aria-hidden="true" class="wp-block-spacer"></div>

<hr class="wp-block-separator"/>

<div style="height:20px" aria-hidden="true" class="wp-block-spacer"></div>

<p>They made an <strong>Aszú from the furmint grape</strong>, which is another local favorite. Then there&#8217;s a rare one from the <strong>muscat grape</strong>. Finally, we have the general favorite which is a Tokaji Aszu made from the hárslevelű. I chose the latter because I liked the taste, and because this is the best choice for Tokaji Aszú among the three.</p>

<div style="height:20px" aria-hidden="true" class="wp-block-spacer"></div>

<div class="wp-block-image"><figure class="aligncenter size-large is-resized"><img decoding="async" src="https://www.travelifemagazine.com/wp-content/uploads/IMG_0344-768x1024.jpg" alt="The finest sweet wine in Hungary is the created by the Imperial winery of Tokaj-Hétszőlő in Tokaj" class="wp-image-35644" width="576" height="768" srcset="https://www.travelifemagazine.com/wp-content/uploads/IMG_0344-768x1024.jpg 768w, https://www.travelifemagazine.com/wp-content/uploads/IMG_0344-225x300.jpg 225w, https://www.travelifemagazine.com/wp-content/uploads/IMG_0344.jpg 900w" sizes="(max-width: 576px) 100vw, 576px" /></figure></div>

<div style="height:20px" aria-hidden="true" class="wp-block-spacer"></div>

<p>Most fine wine shops anywhere don’t even have a bottle of this very special Aszú in their cellars anymore. Moreover, even Hétszőlő only has about 50 bottles left of this wine that can keep nicely even for 100 years.</p>

<h2 class="wp-block-heading">Winemaker of Hétszőlő</h2>

<div style="height:20px" aria-hidden="true" class="wp-block-spacer"></div>

<div class="wp-block-image"><figure class="aligncenter size-large"><img decoding="async" width="640" height="540" src="https://www.travelifemagazine.com/wp-content/uploads/IMG_0332.jpg" alt="The finest sweet wine in Hungary is the Tokaji Aszú 1999 6 puttonyos created by the Imperial winery of Tokaj-Hétszőlő in Tokaj" class="wp-image-36269" srcset="https://www.travelifemagazine.com/wp-content/uploads/IMG_0332.jpg 640w, https://www.travelifemagazine.com/wp-content/uploads/IMG_0332-300x253.jpg 300w" sizes="(max-width: 640px) 100vw, 640px" /></figure></div>

<div style="height:20px" aria-hidden="true" class="wp-block-spacer"></div>

<p>So I took four cases to place in their cellars on a whim and a lot of inspiration. And just before leaving, Kathryn also asked: “Would you like me to place a note on your cases of wine? Lots of people place messages on their wines for personal reasons.”</p>

<p>So I wrote on a piece of paper for her to attach to wines: “In beautiful Tokaj, ever so happily living a #Travelife.”</p>

<p>In&nbsp;<a href="https://www.facebook.com/hashtag/hungary?source=feed_text&amp;epa=HASHTAG">Hungary</a>&nbsp;yesterday, I bought Tokaj Aszu wine. By buying four cases, I felt like I&#8217;d purchased a piece of the world-famous wine town of Tokaj itself.</p>

<p>The <strong>György Posta</strong>, <strong>Mayor of Tokaj</strong>, himself took me for wine tasting in the <strong>Imperial winery of Tokaj-Hetszolo</strong>. This is the <strong>most historic and picturesque winery in Hungary</strong>.&nbsp;</p>

<div style="height:20px" aria-hidden="true" class="wp-block-spacer"></div>

<h2 class="wp-block-heading">WINE OF KINGS &amp; CZARS</h2>

<p>Serious wine lovers know that the <strong>Tokaj Aszu</strong> is among the <strong>best dessert wines in the world</strong>. In fact, <strong>King Louis XIV of France</strong> described the Tokaj Aszu as the “<strong>wine of kings</strong>.”&nbsp;</p>

<p>Meanwhile<strong> Peter the Great of Russia</strong> loved drinking this wine too. He too used to send <strong>Russian soldiers to Hungary</strong> all the way from <strong>St. Petersburg </strong>just to pick up and guard <strong>barrels of Tokaj Aszu wines</strong> for his use.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Well, the <strong>Hetszolo winery</strong> is at the top of the Aszu pyramid. </p>

<div style="height:20px" aria-hidden="true" class="wp-block-spacer"></div>

<figure class="wp-block-image"><a href="https://www.travelifemagazine.com/buying-tokaj-aszu-wine-hungary-hertszolo/"><img decoding="async" width="1024" height="913" src="https://www.travelifemagazine.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/08/IMG_0478-1024x913.jpg" alt="Buying cases of Tokaj Aszu 1999 6 puttonyos wine from Tokaj Hétszölö after a wine tasting at their winery in Hungary. <div style="height:20px" aria-hidden="true" class="wp-block-spacer"></div>

<h2 class="wp-block-heading">ABOUT TOKAJ HETZOLO</h2>

<p>The <strong>Tokaj Hétszölö</strong> vineyards and winery on Mount Tokaj is arguably the most prestigious in Hungary. The winery was founded in 1502 and it later became a property of the Hapsburgs . This is why it is considered an Imperial winery. After <strong>the fall of the Soviet Union</strong>, Hétszölö was the first winery to produce quality wines. It also became the <strong>most famous for Tokaj Aszu wines.</strong></p>

<p>Tokaj Hétszölö is the most aristocratic of wineries in Hungary but a French winemaker actually owns it now. <strong>Michel Reybier, owner of Chateau d’Estournel</strong>, bought Tokaj Hétszölö and has invested capital to take it to the next level.</p>

<div style="height:20px" aria-hidden="true" class="wp-block-spacer"></div>

<figure class="wp-block-image"><img decoding="async" width="1024" height="386" src="https://www.travelifemagazine.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/08/FB-COVER-PHOTO-VOL-11-ISS-4-5-1115x420-1-1024x386.jpg" alt="Travelife Magazine at Bushman's Kloof in South Africa" class="wp-image-32388" srcset="https://www.travelifemagazine.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/08/FB-COVER-PHOTO-VOL-11-ISS-4-5-1115x420-1-1024x386.jpg 1024w, https://www.travelifemagazine.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/08/FB-COVER-PHOTO-VOL-11-ISS-4-5-1115x420-1-300x113.jpg 300w, https://www.travelifemagazine.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/08/FB-COVER-PHOTO-VOL-11-ISS-4-5-1115x420-1-768x289.jpg 768w, https://www.travelifemagazine.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/08/FB-COVER-PHOTO-VOL-11-ISS-4-5-1115x420-1.jpg 1115w" sizes="(max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px" /></figure>

<div style="height:20px" aria-hidden="true" class="wp-block-spacer"></div>

<hr class="wp-block-separator"/>

<div style="height:20px" aria-hidden="true" class="wp-block-spacer"></div>

<h2 class="wp-block-heading">CELLAR OF KINGS</h2>

<p>In Tokaj, Mayor Posta and I did our wine tasting in a dramatic ancient cave where <strong>King Charles III</strong> was proclaimed monarch of Hungary. This definitely added drama to an already very impressive tasting room. </p>

<p>The wine tasting experience was so nice that I felt like buying some Aszu wines at the end of it. So when Hétszölö said they would store my wines in their ancient cellar, I decided to buy a couple of <strong>cases of Tokaj Aszu wines</strong> from <strong>Hétszölö</strong>. </p>

<div style="height:20px" aria-hidden="true" class="wp-block-spacer"></div>

<figure class="wp-block-image"><a href="https://www.travelifemagazine.com/buying-tokaj-aszu-wine-hungary-hertszolo/"><img decoding="async" width="1024" height="844" src="https://www.travelifemagazine.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/08/IMG_0454-1024x844.jpg" alt="Buying cases of Tokaj Aszu 1999 6 puttonyos wine from Tokaj Hétszölö after a wine tasting at their winery in Hungary. <div style="height:20px" aria-hidden="true" class="wp-block-spacer"></div>

<h2 class="wp-block-heading">SHIPPING WINES FROM HUNGARY</h2>

<p>“Anytime you need your wines, we can always ship them to you,” Kathryn, who works at the winery, said. “And in the meantime, they’ll be safe and sound in our caves.”</p>

<p>That sounded so nice. It felt like I owned a piece of Hungary, a country I love. So I asked: “<strong>Which is your best Tokaj Aszu</strong>?”</p>

<h2 class="wp-block-heading">THE BEST TOKAJ ASZU</h2>

<div style="height:20px" aria-hidden="true" class="wp-block-spacer"></div>

<figure class="wp-block-image"><a href="https://www.travelifemagazine.com/buying-tokaj-aszu-wine-hungary-hertszolo/"><img decoding="async" width="730" height="960" src="https://www.travelifemagazine.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/08/69266792_10220427187493537_8541620891434352640_n.jpg" alt="Buying cases of Tokaj Aszu 1999 6 puttonyos wine from Tokaj Hétszölö after a wine tasting at their winery in Hungary. <div style="height:20px" aria-hidden="true" class="wp-block-spacer"></div>

<p>Everyone at the winery said that the <strong><a href="http://www.vivino.com">Tokaj Aszu 6 puttonyos from 1999</a></strong> was one of the best produced so far. For one thing, 1999 was a spectacular year for Aszu wines. </p>

<p>Moreover, in 1999, Hetszolo actually made <strong>three kinds of Aszu</strong> in the <strong>6 puttonyos level.</strong> They made an Azsu from the <strong>furmint grape</strong>, and a rare one from the <strong>muscat grape</strong>, and another one from the classic <strong>Tokaj grape called harslevelu</strong>. I chose the latter because I liked the taste, and because this is generally considered to be the best choice among the three. </p>

<h2 class="wp-block-heading">THE TOKAJ ASZU 1999, 6 PUTTONYOS </h2>

<p>Most<strong> fine wine shops</strong> anywhere, whether in <strong>Budapest</strong> or <strong>London</strong> or <strong>Hong Kong</strong>, don’t even have a bottle of this in their cellars anymore. Moreover, even <strong>Hetszolo</strong> only has about 50 bottles left of this <strong>very special Aszu wine</strong> that can keep nicely even for 100 years.</p>

<h2 class="wp-block-heading">WINEMAKER OF HETSZOLO</h2>

<p>So I took four cases yesterday to place in their cellars. It seemed especially nice to do as I’d spent the day with the mayor and also met <strong>Gergely Makai</strong>, the chief <strong>wine maker of Hetszolo</strong>. In fact the wine maker said: “Next time you visit, please stay at the Hetszolo chateau as our guest.”&nbsp;<a href="https://www.facebook.com/hashtag/lucky?source=feed_text&amp;epa=HASHTAG">#lucky</a></p>

<p>Before leaving, Kathryn asked: “Would you like me to place a note on your cases of wine? Lots of people place messages on their wines for personal reasons.”</p>

<p>So I wrote on a piece of paper: “In beautiful Hungary, ever&nbsp;<br>so happily <strong><a href="https://www.travelifemagazine.com">living a #Travelife</a></strong>.”</p>
