The best places to eat in Budapest

This post is about the best places to eat in Budapest based on our visit to Hungary.  My personal choices are a casual lunch at Stand 21 for the best goulash in Budapest and a dinner onboard the Pannonia boat that cruises the Danube River in Budapest.

Towards the end of our two-week visit to Hungary, we often asked ourselves: “Which of all the wonderful meals, champagne breakfasts included, did we like the most?” Almost every meal on our trip was delicious and memorable, so there was no easy answer except to say “everything was delicious.” And we meant it.

THE BEST GOULASH IN BUDAPEST

We had healthy breakfasts of nuts and grains with yoghurt and organic scrambled eggs at the Kempinski Hotel Corvinus in Budapest and yoghurt with berries and hot chocolate mixed with coffee at a cafe by the Danube River in Szentendre called the Cafe Christine. For lunch, we had the best goulash in Hungary on our trip at Stand 21 at a Food Hall near the Parliament of Budapest.

THE BEST TABLE IN BUDAPEST

Among restaurants in Budapest, we had many favourites. Almost every evening was just lovely and delicious. But, for the absolute wow factor, however, I chose the six-course dinner cruise along the Danube.

When we were there in early September, it was the perfect evening in terms of weather, and our dinner was on a historic wooden boat that sailed up and down the Danube as we ate.

We had no expectations that night, but we reserved a table on a boat called the Pannonia because it seemed like a fun thing to do in Budapest. We walked to the quay from the Kempinski Hotel and espied the traditional boat. The lady who greeted us at the entrance took us inside a pretty private dining room.

Last-minute, as we were being led to our table in a pretty private dining room onboard, we asked: “Can we eat outside instead?”

AL FRESCO DINING IN BUDAPEST

We’d seen a table on deck which was totally private, but it had to be the best table in Budapest, along the Danube, that night. Fortunately, the ship’s team agreed to our request. So they set everything up for us on deck, champagne and wines included.

Then for three hours we sat outside enjoying dinner and toasting endlessly to “Travel” and “Life.” And also to lots and lots of Luck #ThankYou
