This morning, after a 12.5-hour overnight flight, I was Johannesburg’s O.R. Tambo International Airport waiting for my connecting flight to Cape Town.
It’s funny to think how I was just in this part of the world exactly four weeks ago, on a nice holiday in Tanzania.
And how I was exactly in this very Johannesburg airport, about to start a South African adventure, exactly one year ago to this very date.
HOW NICE TO SEE YOU AGAIN
This morning, I even passed the very same restaurant we ate in at this airport. We were killing time before the flight, so we had a club sandwich for lunch before the flight to Cape Town.
Every day was a wonderful lunch on that trip, but this simple club sandwich lunch in Johannesburg’s airport was one of my absolute favorites, for some reason.

I didn’t plan it this way.
However, on the airplane to Joburg, when I started to think about the dates of my trips to Africa, I realized there was more serendipity than I imagined between my three trips to Africa in a matter of 12 months.
And now here I am at this simply lovely hotel in Cape Town, with a beautiful room full of lovely artwork.
I’ve booked a stay in a hotel in Cape Town on the first and the last nights of my stay in South Africa.
24 hours on a plane and here I am, 15 minutes into check-in and raring to check out the shops in Cape Town as soon as I post this blog….
One hotel is a very trendy hotel that’s the talk of the town at the moment, while the other one is a perfectly classic hotel.
TRENDY IS WONDERFUL
And I’m at the trendy hotel right now.
It’s a completely refurbished hotel on a Cape Dutch estate similar to my favorite Steenberg hotel in the Cape Town suburb of Constantia.
In fact, when I saw the facade of the hotel, it really seemed like I was back at the Steenberg.
I’ve checked in for all of 15 minutes, and a driver is already at the entrance to take me shopping for the afternoon. I’ve got a couple of things on my list this time around. Hopefully I’ll get more shopping time on this trip compared to last year.
But more on that later.
And in my next blog entry, let me tell you a little story about my flight to Joburg, on just another wonderful journey in my never-ending, and never-endingly eventful Travelife.
