Tori Howse of Another World Adventures discusses the world’s most amazing destinations

Tori Howse, Director of Another World Adventures, spends her time helping others set off on extraordinary journeys. When she’s not creating trips of a lifetime for adventure seekers, she’s getting off the beaten track herself exploring far-flung places of the world in a bid to get through her endless bucket list.

HOW HAS TRAVELING CHANGED YOUR LIFE?

I’ve often found traveling to be a gateway to a new part of my life. I met my business partner whilst on a transatlantic sailing trip, and running an adventure travel business means we now get to help other people discover their own life-changing journeys.

HOW DO YOU CHOOSE YOUR NEXT DESTINATION?

If I’m traveling purely for pleasure, then I choose the destination based on how I want to feel at the end of the trip – relaxedsatisfied at having completed a physical challenge, or inspired by a new culture. I read books and blogs for travel inspiration and keep a long list of must-see places that just gets longer and longer.

HOW DO YOU PREPARE FOR A TRIP?

I’m terrible at last minute packing, but I do try and pack light so I don’t have too much to lug around and have space for gifts and goodies I might pick up en route. I always ask travel contacts and friends for top tips before I set off to a new destination as nothing beats a personal recommendation.

WHAT’S A TYPICAL TRAVEL ITINERARY FOR YOU?

If I’m visiting one of our adventure operators the itinerary will likely be very active – from skiing in Iceland to horse riding in Canada. As my work involves discovering new “adventures,” people tend to assume I am a hugely competent skierkayaker, rider, sailor etc. This is not always the case! But I do get a great buzz from trying new things.

WHAT’S THE BEST WAY TO EXPLORE A NEW CITY?

Breakfast is my favorite meal of the day so that’s my first stop when exploring a new city. Finding a good place for a typical local breakfast is a great way to get a feel for a city and being up early means you’re often surrounded by locals rather than other tourists.

WHICH CITY IN THE WORLD IS MOST MEMORABLE FOR YOU?

Hard to choose but I love Cape Town for its majestic beaches, delicious food, nearby wine country and breathtaking views.

TORI’S TOP 5 CITIES TO VISIT

Reykjavik
Bogota
Cape Town
Granada
Hong Kong

DESCRIBE ONE OF YOUR FAVORITE PLACES IN THE WORLD.

Iceland. The people are welcoming, the culture rich, and the natural environment extraordinary. For a small country, it’s relatively easy to get out into the wilderness and the imposing landscapes make me feel small and insignificant and
in awe of nature.

“I FIND MY MOST CREATIVE INSPIRATION AT SEA, SURROUNDED BY BIG OPEN HORIZONS AND ENDLESS OCEAN AND SKY.”

WHAT’S YOUR BEST ANTI-JETLAG TRICK?

Don’t eat plane food. Then, when you arrive at your destination, have a two-hour nap – no longer – and then get on with your day in local time.

TORI’S TOP 3 TRAVEL ESSENTIALS

1
A large and pretty scarf – great to wear
but also useful as a blanket or
pillow on long journeys.
2
A good novel based on the region I’m visiting.
3
My iPhone for photos, Google maps, and social media.
I have a terrible sense of direction.

WHERE IN THE WORLD DO YOU LIKE RETURNING TO AGAIN AND AGAIN?

I can’t wait to go back to Colombia for its happy people, fantastic music, and stunning natural landscapes. The country has been transformed over the last decade, leaving its violent reputation behind, and there’s a wonderful positive
buzz to the place.

TELL US ABOUT A TRAVEL EXPERIENCE THAT BLEW YOUR MIND AWAY

I sailed across the Atlantic Ocean on a traditional tall ship back in 2011 and no travel experience has beaten it yet — although many have come close! It was 27 days full of sailing, laughing, whale-watchingstar-gazing, swimming in the ocean, climbing the rigging, riding out storms and making brilliant friends! I was completely out of my comfort zone and cut off from my day-to-day life, and it was fantastic.
