Sailing to Vienna in the thick fog and about a concert by the Vienna Residence Orchestra

In Austria today, living a #Travelife, we sailed from the town of Melk, home to a majestic abbey, to Vienna onboard the AmaPrima ship of Ama Waterways in very thick fog.

Most of the time there was zero visibility, and you would’ve thought the fog would be a damper on a winter cruise along the Danube River. But it was actually very nice.

We also did a bit of chess on the rooftop, fog and all.
The last time I played chess was on safari
at the Ngorongoro Crater in Tanzania,
living a #Travelife…

Just as we were leaving the port, we put on our furs and our Heat Tech clothes and sat on the rooftop of the AmaPrima enjoying the cold winter air and the sensation of sailing into complete nothingness.

All the while we were drinking cup after cup of a delicious concoction of the ship’s bartender made of white wine, sparkling water and elderflower syrup.

It was 11 AM and we were all on something like our fourth cup of this drink by the time we sailed, but we were on holiday anyway, living a #Travelife.

Most of the time we couldn’t even see one foot ahead, but it was very enjoyable.

And then occasionally the fog cleared just in time for us to see the most beautiful spots in this stretch of the Danube River running along the Wachau Valley. The wine-producing Wachau Valley, by the way, is one of the loveliest areas in Austria.

When we got to Vienna, we went to listen to a performance of the Vienna Residence Orchestra, one of the finest chamber orchestras in the world, founded with the purpose of performing the music of the Viennese classical period in its purest form.

The concert included the famous Radetsky March which is traditionally played during the New Year’s concert in Vienna of the Vienna Philarmonic Orchestra.

When we returned to the ship, we stayed up until late, talking and laughing over bowls of Hungarian goulash and apple strudel, on just another wonderful day in my never-ending, and never-endingly eventful #Travelife.
