Seeking rest and recreation amidst a busy work week, I decided to try a bamboo massage wellness treatment. My go-to place for a great massage is usually the Marina Bay Spa and Lifestyle Club, a private club along Manila Bay. It’s a membership-only spa that offers wonderful wellness and relaxation treatments.
So last week I booked a bamboo massage there with my favorite therapist Annalyn. The Marina Bay Spa and Lifestyle Club is one of the few places offering a proper bamboo massage in the Philippines.
WHAT IS A BAMBOO MASSAGE?
“What’s the difference between a regular massage and a bamboo massage?” I asked Annalyn. She replied: “They are both spa treatments based on Swedish-style massage to relax the muscles. But the bamboo massage uses bamboo sticks of different sizes to roll and knead the skin.”
Annalyn continued: “The bamboo sticks are heated so this combination of heat and kneading is very relaxing.”
BAMBOO STICKS FOR MASSAGE
I took a look at the special red package she brought into the treatment room. There were at least six bamboo sticks of varying sizes – each one was for a designated part of the body.
“It actually takes a lot of skills to do this treatment,” she explained. “Using the bamboo for massage is much more complicated because you must know exactly where to apply pressure. Using the bamboo in the wrong place may end up hurting the client. So it’s really important to only get a bamboo massage from a trained therapist.”
RELAXING WITH BAMBOO
My massage was way more relaxing than I expected, considering the hard sticks she was working with. The heat was very soothing and the bamboo sticks were able to knead the muscles in exactly the right places for stress relief.
At the end of my treatment, Annalyn had to wake me up. I’d fallen asleep without even realizing it because the massage had been so effective.
PERFECT COMBINATION: INDIAN HEAD MASSAGE
Pair your massage with a one-hour Indian head massage for stress relief, relaxation and rejuvenation.
The therapist applies coconut oil on your scalp and methodically applies pressure and pulls lightly on hair strands for a sensation of relief. This treatment is also said to help with hair growth and scalp care.
