Flying out to lunch, and we’ve got five choices.

So when I woke up this morning, there was a BBM message from my very old friend about lunch plans for today.

I’d bumped into him at an event yesterday, and we reconnected after a few months of absolutely no contact. I’ve basically been away since June, and he’s forever traveling — much worse than me, actually — and in the last few months, he’d changed his Blackberry and we’d gotten disconnected.

But yesterday, on the spur of the moment, he asked me to join him for a lunch with a pretty prominent couple who I also happen to know socially, but not too well.

They’d been among my 480 guests for dinner at Travelife Italy Night sometime back, but I’d never gotten the chance to really get to know them.

So I canceled my lunch plans for today to join lunch with this old friend, as there’s not too many opportunities to do so, when two peripatetic travelers are involved.

He’s several generations ahead of me, but I’ve known him for about 30 years — so there’s very little formality between us.

And even way back then he was already very successful and living large. These days, I can’t look out a window and not see something he owns.

Anyway he said yesterday: “If the weather is good, I’m flying everyone out to XXX for lunch. We’ll leave at about 11 AM and we should be heading back at about 230 PM. Let you know where we’re going tomorrow.”

He has a new “toy,” you see. If that’s what you can call a pretty pricey aircraft.

I haven’t been on this “toy” yet but I’d seen photos on his BBM status updates before we got disconnected, and I knew he personally flew somewhere abroad to fly this brand new state-of-the-art “baby” back home.

And early this morning, he sent me a message saying that it looks like the weather may hold up for flying, after all. It looks like he’s determined to get out of Manila for lunch, and cars are really never the way to go for him.

He listed down about five places he’d chosen for lunch, and the final choice will depend on weather conditions and other factors, just when we’re about to take off.

Three of them are actually do-able by car, as well. But, yes — why take the car when you have your own aircraft and you can just fly and avoid all the traffic?

Frankly, all of the places he listed down are very nice, so I don’t mind lunch at any of these places.

It’ll be nice to get out of the city, even if I was just away for five weeks, and then headed to Madrid this weekend for two weeks of traveling around Spain.

And most of all, I’m just happy to reconnect again with an old friend for lunch, in just another day in my never-ending, and never-endingly eventful Travelife.
