Tonight, in Manila living a Travelife, I had two dear girl friends over for a very casual dinner.
I decided to make it very casual, as we were all detoxing in one way or another.
BETWEEN TRIPS IN A NEVER–ENDING TRAVELIFE
We three were meeting up in between trips involving food – although in my case, it’s more like one trip involving food and one trip (coming up soon, to Tanzania) involving wild animals of every kind.
To be good, I served a simple dinner.
Goodies from Spain as appetizers, and then I set up a make–your–own–salad–or–sandwich station with salad vegetables, grilled bread, and pulled pork that had been in the slow cooker for at least eight hours.
A DELICIOUSLY HEALTHY DESSERT
Then my friend S brought a delicious pie made with Greek yoghurt and fruit for dessert, since she knows I’m on this healthy track before flying off again in a few days.
IN THE EXTREME WILDERNESS
S also brought me a bag of goodies as an advanced birthday gift, as I’m spending my birthday in Tanzania, in one of the most remote places of a remote country.
I didn’t really plan it this way, but this is how everything eventually fell into place for our Tanzania trip.
Talk about a great adventure on the day you turn one year older – and I’m sure it’ll be great fun.
WHAT A GIRL WANTS…
Ever so thoughtful, S filled the bag with everything a girl could possibly want for three safaris, a beach resort, and eight rides on very small airplanes with 15-kilo luggage limits.
Top of the list was a sunblock with SPF 90.
Meanwhile, my other friend is on her way to somewhere equally exotic soon.
NO EXCUSES. PLAIN SIMPLE FUN.
But unlike me, as I’m going to Tanzania for the pure enjoyment of it all, she’s going to this extreme destination to seek self–enlightenment and spiritual renewal.
She envisions herself ringing those monastery bells on a desolate mountaintop, and then she hopes an epiphany about certain dilemma in her life will come at exactly that point.
Of course, after S and I listened to her ponderings, we lost no time in giving her some advice.
Or at least our two cents’ worth on what she should do regarding her dilemma.
SENSE AND SENSIBILITY
This friend finally said: “OMG. See what talking to two sensible girl friends can do? I’ve found the answer to my questions and I didn’t even need to leave home.”
Then she added: “I’ve found the answers I’ve been looking for. Whatever am I going to do on this trip now? I don’t need to walk up mountains and ponder in temples anymore.”
S and I looked at each other. We had the same thing in mind.
Almost simultaneously, we replied: “Shop.”
In our humble opinion, shopping is great fun. We’ve also seen how it can sure cure all kinds of ills, imagined or otherwise.
And that’s how another interesting day ended in my never-ending, and never–endingly eventful Travelife.
