Yesterday, in Cape Town living a Travelife, I booked the famous Bastien Gonzalez pedicure at the spa of the One & Only Cape Town.
The spa of the One & Only Cape Town was chosen “best spa in Africa” several times over.
It’s very spacious, and it offers ESPA treatments, Bastien Gonzalez pedicures and manicures, and haircuts by Cape Town’s hottest stylist.

BIG FAN OF ESPA
I love ESPA treatments and products ever since I first tried them over twelve years ago at the Chiva Som resort in Thailand and at the Mandarin Oriental in London.
So when I saw ESPA on the spa menu of the One & Only Cape Town, I quickly booked myself a facial the other day.
A PEDICURE INSTEAD OF AN APARTMENT HUNT
Then, yesterday, the companion was proposing to spend the morning driving around and looking at luxury real estate properties all over the hills and coasts of Cape Town.
It’s his first time in Africa, and he’d only spent two days so far in Cape Town, but already he’d decided he wanted to buy either an apartment or a vineyard.
In the general scheme of things global, you see, Cape Town prices are relatively cheap, so he’s doing it partly for fun, and partly to take a bet on a soft real estate market in this part of the world.
IT’S PEDICURE TIME
Well, I preferred to get the best pedicure in the world, rather than look at the best value real estate in the world.
So I arranged to get my pedicure with Kim Milton, manager of the Bastien Gonzalez studio at the One & Only Cape Town, while he was driving around town with a real estate agent and a map.
THERAPIST TO THE STARS
Bastien Gonzalez is the manicurist/ pedicurist to the world’s A-listers in Paris and London.
In these cities, he doesn’t even run his own salons.
He simply shuttles back and forth between Paris and London (yes, he’s on a never-ending Travelife too) and he visits the A-listers at their homes to do their hands and feet.
I understand his services cost a small fortune.

ONLY AT THE ONE & ONLY
But he does have studios at all the One & Only Resorts, and — lucky for me — the One & Only Cape Town reportedly offers the least expensive Bastien Gonzalez pedicure in the world.
Guess where the most expensive Bastien Gonzalez pedicure is?
Hong Kong, apparently.
Anyway, I had to use the word “least expensive” because it’s definitely not a cheap pedicure. But, after doing it, I have to say that it’s worth every dollar.
A SERIOUSLY LUXURIOUS PEDICURE
This is the most serious, and seriously luxurious, pedicure I have had in my life. And I go to spas all the time.
First, they have utterly serious equipment, including a specially made chair both for the therapist and for the customer.
Heights and angles for both can be adjusted with a flick of a button for maximum flexibility.
They also use very specialized tools from France and Germany, including a glass nail file and a podiatrist’s drill.
The latter is similar to a dentist’s drill, except it has attachments for the feet instead of for the teeth.
They also use only their own specially formulated lotions and powders in their treatments, with the Bastien brand name, of course.
WHAT A DRILL CAN DO
With this drill, and the special attachments, the therapist files away every dead skin and lackluster nail with a bit of black diamond dust.
The result is brand new feet and super shiny nails that don’t even need nail polish.
It’s literally like baby feet. No wonder all the celebrities love it.
SAVE THE BEST FOR LAST
This is not where it ends either.
Kim puts on patented Bastien Gonzalez toe separators on your feet, to stretch the toes and align them.
It’s an amazing feeling the minute she puts these on you — and I was so sold on them that I bought a pair to take home.
For a finale, she does a fantastic leg and toe circulation massage afterwards. It’s really so good, and I’ve never had a foot and leg massage like this as it’s more therapy than relaxation.
I’m sold. I’m a fan.
Wherever there is a Bastien Gonzalez pedicure available, I’m definitely getting one, in my never-ending, and never-endingly eventful Travelife.
