Several years ago, I went on a trip for 60 days that involved literally going around the world.
This world trip included some favorite places and also a handful of exotic new ones.
It was to be the last word in passionate travel — this amazing 60 day journey that circumnavigated the globe by air, land and sea.
This is part 3 of that trip.
LABOR DAY IN PARIS
We were in France for three weeks, two of which we spent in Paris, having a wonderful time.
On Labor Day, we were still in Paris, and we were invited to dinner by my Parisian friends.
The husband is a French architect, his American wife is a novelist and their daughter is a sommelier who trained at La Pergola, one of Rome’s top restaurants.
We went to have dinner at their charming home in the 7th arrondissement.
Here, we had a very authentic French meal of fresh white asparagus, roast cuts of beef and, again, just too much wine.
It was quintessential French hospitality without any artfulness or formality.
I remember how we drank wine out of mismatched antique goblets that gave everything a wonderful elegance.

A RESPECTED WINE EXPERT
We also met Peter, the daughter’s boyfriend, who is known as a legendary wine expert in France, and this began a great friendship over food and wine.
We didn’t know then just how respected Peter was in France’s wine world until we read about him in various books and websites that mentioned him in the same breath with Robert Parker.
ROYALTY IN A RESTAURANT
Also, a few months later, the four of us were back in our favorite Paris again and we met up with Peter.
Over lunch with him at the Michelin two-star Carre des Feuillants, we observed with amusement as the chef came out to greet Peter like royalty and how the sommelier quaked with pressure over his wine recommendations.
As for the food, it was very good. It wasn’t my top favorite as that’s a pretty tall order in a city full of good but rather expensive restaurants.
However, the guys still maintain that this was one of their best meals in Paris.
And that lunch certainly was enjoyable, on just another wonderful day in our never-ending, and never-endingly eventful Travelife.
