The perfect beach holiday at JW Marriott Phuket Resort & Spa in Thailand

“I’m going to like it here very much,” I said to my husband, as we walked through the lobby of the JW Marriott Phuket Resort & Spa, one of the best resorts in Phuket, to check in for a week-long family holiday.

My first impressions of this sprawling resort with a wonderful location along Mai Khao Beach, one of Phuket’s best beaches, was of an old-fashioned colonial seaside plantation with the warm colors of terracotta tiles and hardwood floors accented by Portuguese-style colonial furniture, graceful lamps, and fabrics in calming shades of sea green, azure blue, and turquoise

I love observing the interiors of hotels, and the décor of JW Marriott Phuket Resort & Spa was truly unique, bringing up more of the Asian colonial feel while not sidelining the Thai heritage.

THE FEELING OF HOME
IN PHUKET, THAILAND

The result was an atmosphere of comfort, luxury, and good taste that was unlike anywhere else I’d seen so far in Phuket, an island known for beautiful destination resorts. In fact, the 252 rooms, 13 suites, and 13 restaurants and bars of the JW Marriott Phuket Resort & Spa, along with two mammoth pools, a Mandara spa, a children’s club, and a turtle sanctuary, felt more like someone’s well-appointed home.

The overall resort plan contributes greatly to this feeling of welcome that you receive immediately upon arrival. The wide-berthed reception area, filled with elegant lounging sofas, artwork, and potted plants, beckons you to spend the day there reading a book in between glimpses across at the sea and at the large reflecting pool that acts as a buffer.

And this is just the hotel lobby of the JW Marriott Phuket Resort & SpaThe sea is a vast expanse right across the lobby so it’s impossible to miss. And on both sides are chairs and swings, along with a very pretty bar I just couldn’t help taking photos of, each time I passed.

GOOD MORNINGS
IN PHUKET, THAILAND

Start the day at the JW Marriott Phuket Resort & Spa with an impressive buffet spread of Western food, Thai specialties, and healthy options. The chefs are all on hand to make everything from omelettes to rice porridge. There’s even a juice bar with a wide array of fruits – you get to pick your fruits and a chef pops everything into a state-of-the-art juicer right in front of you – and a noodle bar that ladles out steaming bowls of soup heaping with ingredients in real-time.

BEAUTIFUL DESIGN
IN PHUKET, THAILAND

Meanwhile, our deluxe room in JW Marriott Phuket Resort & Spa was a balanced combination of traditional Thai style and classic Western design. The large bathroom had plantation-style windows that opened up directly to the bedroom for an open-plan feeling, making an already spacious 50 square-meter room seem even larger. At the other end, there’s a small balcony and also a Thai corner with cushions on the floor facing a glass window.

In short, it’s ample space for a family of four as the children can happily camp out in the Thai corner. Good luck getting them to stay in the room, though, for this resort is full of things to do. The children’s club at JW Marriott Phuket Resort & Spa has round-the-clock activities and well-trained staff who really like playing with kids. This is very important because many hotels do have kids’ clubs, but not too many of them have staff who truly make the children enjoy their time there.

A REAL TASTE OF THAILAND
AND AUTHENTIC THAI FOOD

Ginja Taste, JW Marriott Phuket Resort & Spa's Thai restaurant, is located in a quiet corner of the estate. If you’re staying in the main buildings, it’s a nice walk through a mini forest or by the beach to a Thai-style pavilion. This is reportedly one of Phuket’s best Thai restaurants, and with good reason. Chef Tam is passionate about recreating authentic dishes from old Phuket, based on heritage family recipes, and about acquiring the freshest produce for his cooking. He even grows his own herbs and  vegetables to ensure quality.

Try Thai dishes done the Phuket way at Ginja Taste in JW Marriott Phuket Resort & Spa, including stewed pork belly with cinnamon sticks and soy sauce, a spicy black pepper curry with pork and potatoes, local black crab served Phuket-style with noodles in a red curry sauce, and a fish mousse and fillet in a red curry paste.

THE BEST TEPPANYAKI IN PHUKET

When you’re longing for a change from delicious curries and seafood, you can head to Kabuki, one of the best Japanese restaurants in Phuket. They serve everything at Kabuki – from sushi to tempura.

But the best experience is the dinner at the teppanyaki grill, where a master chef will literally undertake an amazing performance for the evening, twirling knives and balancing vegetables in addition to cooking the best steaks and seafood in town. Kabuki restaurant serves only the finest meat from Japan, including rib-eye cuts from Miyasaki and strip loin steaks from Iwate.

A GREAT KIDS CLUB
FOR CHILDREN IN PHUKET

JW Marriott Phuket Resort & Spa

My litmus test in this aspect is my daughter, a veteran of kids’ clubs all over the world. It was a Thai holiday while we were on vacation here so the staff had their hands full taking care of so many children. It’s a testament to the staff's sincere kindness that my daughter wanted to return here even after we’d checked out and moved to another hotel in Phuket.

There are many activities for adults as well, but frankly, once you see the JW Marriott Phuket Resort & Spa, you’ll just want to close the laptop, keep the reports in the luggage, and just savor being close to nature.

Trust me. You will want to just sit down and enjoy the many perfect moments. My favorite spot for forgetting about the world was a solitary wooden swing hung from the limbs of a giant tree right by the beach. Sitting here, I could hear the waves and feel the wind and immerse into a state of complete relaxation.
