Tapas dinner at the 1912 Museo Bar of the Westin Palace Madrid

Dinner at the 1912 Museo Bar, the historic bar of the Westin Palace Madrid, one of Madrid's top luxury hotels, was definitely an evening to remember. This is the very same bar that Ernest Hemmingway and Salvador Dali once frequented.

LOOKING FOR GOOD FOOD IN MADRID

Returning to Madrid late one evening from a driving trip to Santiago de Compostela, we were exhausted from the long return trip and all we wanted upon arriving back in Madrid was a good but light Spanish dinner after checking into our hotel, the Westin Palace Madrid.

The Westin Palace Madrid, by the way, is one of the best hotels in Madrid. We always stay here because I love the location.

LOCATION OF THE WESTIN PALACE MADRID

The Westin Palace Madrid is just at that right spot at the edge of the main tourist districts of Madrid around Sol and the Plaza Mayor, and it's also as at the edge of the Las Lettras district, which is the Madrid neighbourhood once known for its writers and intellectuals.

At the same time, across the Westin Palace Madrid is the Prado Museum and next to it is the Thyssen Museum. And the Reina Sofia is a short walk away. Past the Prado Museum are all the nice residential neighborhoods of central Madrid, as well as the beautiful Retiro Park.

So when we stay at the Westin Palace Madrid, we never really need a car to go anywhere as most places are short walks away. The hotel itself has wonderful service and extremely comfortable rooms. The breakfast buffet, too, is the best in Madrid, with a wide range of healthy breakfast options and fresh juices, as well as good churros con chocolate and traditional Spanish breakfast favourites.

Anyway, after checking into the Westin Palace Madrid, we realised we did not want to venture out of the hotel for dinner. Luckily, the perfect dining venue awaited.

"Let's have dinner at the 1912 Museo Bar," I suggested. So off we went to get a nice table at the bar for a relaxing dinner accompanied by some great wines.

The 1912 Museo Bar of the Westin Palace Madrid is an institution in Madrid. It's been the favourite hangout for Spain's movers and shakers, along with the great and good of the world, since it opened in 1912.

Yes, the Westin Palace Madrid opened in 1912 and that's where the name of the bar comes from. The King of Spain himself, King Alfonso VIII, opened the Westin Palace Madrid and the silver champagne glass King Alfonso VIII used for the toast at the opening of the hotel is still on display at the 1912 Museo Bar.

DRANK IN MADRID

The 1912 Museo Bar is the favourite watering hole of Spain's politicians, as the Spanish congress is just a few minutes' walk away. This same bar was also the favourite bar of Ernest Hemmingway and Salvador Dali in Madrid.

For us, it was the perfect choice for that evening. We were able to have a wonderful dinner with tapas and a few hot dishes, accompanied by some great Spanish wines. And everything was light and easy so it was not one of those traditional heavy Spanish dinners at all.

Each dish was beautifully plated and extremely tasty, making for a most enjoyable evening in Madrid, living a never-ending #Travelife
