Japanese Emperor Akihito asks to step down as emperor

Practically the entire city of Tokyo -- and in fact, the entire country of Japan -- went on standstill earlier today as a televised address made by Japanese Emperor Akihito was broadcast live to the public via televisions and large screens everywhere.

Japanese at Shibuya crossing, for instance, gasped and fell silent, listening to the request of Emperor Akihito to step down as emperor.

Japanese Prime Minister Abe was said to have received this request with great seriousness although an official government response has yet to be made at this point.
