A mojito and a creative steward on Delta Airlines from Tokyo

Sometimes there really is a silver lining on some dark clouds.

There I was earlier tonight on Delta Airlines from Tokyo's Narita International Airport to Manila, and we were on time and getting ready to fly.

I'd plugged all my devices and looked at the movies, and I was just perusing the business class menu and trying to decide between grilled beef tenderloin or pan-fried shrimps for dinner when an announcement came from the captain about a longer than usual delay due to some maintenance paperwork.

USUALLY VERY LUCKY WITH FLIGHTS.
AND EVERYTHING IN GENERAL.

I fly out somewhere almost every week and I've never missed a flight.

I'm also one of the lucky ones who usually never experience flight delays. So today's flight delay at Narita Airport was a first in a very long time, although there was nothing to complain about as I had a flat bed with a duvet cover in the spacious front end of the cabin, and an entire phalanx of movies to watch.

Things could certainly be worse.

AN AUSPICIOUS DINNER TOMORROW NIGHT

But I was particularly unnerved by this delay as I have a very important dinner I so want to attend in Manila tomorrow, hosted by one of the lovely ladies I'd traveled with to Iceland last month and attended by many of the other lovely ladies who'd been on this trip with me.

It's supposed to be a very nicely done and auspicious celebration, and the extremely impressive gold and red invitations delivered to all our homes said it all.

DITCHING BLACK FOR RED TOMORROW NIGHT

I was excited enough to actually let go of my usual penchant for black in the evenings, and I'd planned to wear an auspiciously red dress with all the accompanying auspicious accessories.

Now, this flight delay. The risk of missing the event because of this was small but it was enough for me to suddenly want a strong drink.

WHAT CREATIVITY & KINDNESS CAN DO

Just at that time, a kindly African-American steward was quietly going around business class asking if anyone wanted drinks. I didn't want wine or champagne or my usual herbal tea. I wanted a drink.

"What do you have?" I asked, as this is about the time I usually order plum wine on the Japanese airlines, and he said: "Practically everything."

"Do you have a mojito?" I asked. And he sighed and said: "That's the only thing we actually don't have."

THE MOJITO EXPERIMENT

But the steward was so nice, and his gesture made me a Delta Airlines fan.

He said: "Tell you what. We have a long delay so let me experiment and see what I can come up with. No promises as we don't even have mint onboard, but I'll try my best."

Minutes later he was back with a drink in a plastic cup. It was pretty much a mojito without the mint, and it was one of the best mojitos I've had in a while, living a never-ending #Travelife.
