The best precision haircut in Manila. And it's home service as well.

This is the artwork I've been working on
for a few minutes every weekend,
living a #Travelife.

I was working on this
just before Pascalain arrived.

In Manila, living a #Travelife, I'd long been hearing about Pascalain Gianello, the French cutter who offers home-service precision haircuts. But a combination of inertia and a busy schedule always prevented me from looking him up.

Instead I had haircuts in Tokyo whenever I was there, and occasionally in Manila when it fancied me.

AN IDEA OVER LUNCH
AT SPICES

In fact, just last week, I was having lunch at Spices at the Peninsula Manila, and while I was having crispy catfish salad, I was toying with the idea of getting a haircut at some salon in the area straight from lunch.

Fortunately, lunch was overextended, leaving me with little time for a haircut.

If I had had my hair cut that day, I might never have texted Pascalain.

THE BEST HAIRCUTTER IN MANILA

Then, another star aligned.

Just before New Year's, I met up with a group of friends for dinner, and one of them showed me Pascalain's number on his mobile phone. Unasked.

He added: "This is the best haircutter in Manila."

I'd heard that already, but I hadn't done anything about it yet. And the home service is a plus. No battling traffic or parking, and everything done in your own home.

A BAD HAIR DAY AT THE BEACH

Finally, yesterday at the beach, I was having a bad hair day. Of course. It was all that sea, salt, wind and humidity.

But this bad hair day yesterday was what made me finally text Pascalain and arrange a haircut at home tonight.

THE PRICE IS RIGHT

Pascalain's haircuts are not the cheapest in Manila. In fact, they're probably the most expensive. However, by international standards, his fees are very reasonable.

And what a difference a good haircut makes.

Friends told me he spends an hour cutting their hair, which makes his fees well worth it. You are the sole focus of a master cutter for a good 60 minutes, after all, and in the comfort of your own home.

Well, tonight, he was at my home for exactly two hours and 40 minutes.

THE ART OF A HAIRCUT

He said: "We're creating a shape based on how your hair moves naturally. This is what precision haircutting is all about."

Pascalain set up a chair in front of a window, so I actually had no access to a mirror until my cut was through. But at the end, I was incredibly pleased with what he had done, and I understood completely what he meant by a precision haircut. He's really an artist -- and, happily, one with very little attitude.

Wow. I'm impressed enough to write about him and place his phone number here. Call him.

  1. Merci beaucoup - Maraming salamat po

The basic of easy hair is very simple: Healthy hair with a perfect shape, whatever the length! It needs respect and constancy! It's a different approach! "If I love your hair, you should love it more!"

Got my very first haircut fr Pascalain last week. WOW.

First off, his excellence in communication w/a prospective client. I dialed then hung up to make an appt bec realized I didn't have the address of where I would be staying for him to do the home service. Was I shocked so see him promptly text me shortly thereafter to find out if I had called! I explained my situation and he was incredibly accommodating re the nebulousness of the details at the time.

After a few more texts back & forth, the day of the appt arrived. I was concerned he'd hit traffic therefore would likely be late (classic Phil story!). Nope. Being the absolute professional he is, he opted to make sure he'd arrive early than late. He also texted that he'd end up coming early.

  3. Now, The Cut, the Pascalain Gianello Cut -- Frankly, I'm almost at a loss for words to fully give justice to the precision, perfection and beauty of his cut. Like a surgeon, scientist and an artist all rolled into one, he analyzed my hair, its growth, where my cowlick is, the shape of my head, the cut that was done prior. I learned, for the very 1st time in my life, that my cowlick is exactly right on the crown of my head (a lucky break!) and my hair grows counterclockwise!

All the above evidence to his knowledge and care, that my head of hair was now in the BEST hands it has ever been and will probably ever be. He then began transforming my hair to fit my face, personality, hair type; correcting, as best he could, the prior work on it. As he was doing so, a lively and deep conversation about the sad misconceptions and failures of the the hair styling industry re hair cuts progressed. It was enlightening, educational and admirable to hear him speak of his industry. It shouldn't surprise you to know then that he is in the list of the top 50 hairdressers in the world.

To say that the final result of my cut is beautiful is an understatement. My hair is now pretty short, chopped off of all the prior highlights. It feels naked, I felt naked. But, in having the heartfelt and soulfelt talk with Pascalain, for the first time I feel and see the beauty that is revealed when the wisdom of one's own natural hair is shown in all its glory. I am able to resist the urge, out of fear, to color it or mess w/it in any way. This is what Pascalain does magnificently and eloquently.

If all the above is not enough, I saw how respectful and gentlemanly he is as well. Originally the plan was for him to cut my parents' hair too. Well, sadly, my parents were unprepared & unwilling to bec Pascalain didn't look like what they expected. Needless to say, it was an awkward moment to try & explain to him why they didn't anymore but, without skipping a beat, he said he completely understood, w/a kind & knowing smile, pressed no further.

What Pascalain doesn't know is this -- my dad, went completely ballistic, carrying on and on w/my mom about it during the cut. However, AFTER he saw me, he NEVER SAID ANOTHER WORD AGAIN!!! Folks, that's about as high a compliment he can give to someone he was COMPLETELY against. Again, hats off to dear Pascalain, who, due to his incredible skills, silenced w/his scissors another man into submission! Lol!

The whole time I was being cut, my mom kept looking & seeing it, pined to get one for herself. My dad being adamantly against it then, she didn't push the issue. She asked me to give her the info so she can see him in Makati.

It's a bit sad to me that there aren't more reviews here testifying to Pascalain's genius, generosity and magic. I only found him bec I googled 'best precision hair cutting Philippines'. And, of all things, a Japanese travel & leisure magazine spoke glowing praise about him! Seems that he is Manila's best kept secret. Funny thing is, Koreans & Japanese all know about him! He has a Korean client who flies in just to get his cut.
(In case you're wondering, you can find it in this blog: TraveLife Online. It is in the Feb 2015 issue, titled "The best precision haircut in Manila.)

In closing, run and make an appt to see him, if you can. His products are pretty, freaking awesome too. Maybe you can get to meet his beautiful wife, Sonia, of whom he says, "I adore her" -- you know what they say: "Behind every successful man..."

Infinite thanks & love to you, Pascalain & Sonia <3

PS -- Gotten compliments left and right everywhere I go! I've also caught a few admiring stares here and there :) Whenever I can, I share Pascalain's info.
