Best of a TRAVELIFE 2014: The inspiration to cook more, after watching Les Saveurs du Palais

There are two movies that inspired me to cook more in 2014.

One of them is a French movie called Les Saveurs du Palais, which I watched in Tokyo in French and Japanese. No English subtitles or translations, at least for the version I watched.

A WOMAN CHEF AT THE ELYSEE PALACE

Les Saveurs du Palais stars French actress Catherine Frot. It's about a woman chef who once cooked for a French president at Élysée Palace.

It's supposed to be based on a true story of a lady chef who was once chef for the late French President Francois Mitterand.

RESOLUTION TO COOK MORE

After watching this movie about the joys of cooking and the love of good food, I really got inspired to cook more, especially in Tokyo.

Tokyo is the ideal place to cook, for me, because the produce available here is so good, my schedule isn't so crazy, and you can easily get the best ingredients from around the world.

In fact, I think I went out and bought some new equipment for my kitchen in Tokyo that same day.

THEY SELL ALMOST EVERYTHING
IN TOKYO

Tokyo is really a foodie's paradise. You name it, they're selling it at a supermarket or specialty food store in Tokyo. I can even order online Bresse chicken, which I like to roast with truffles; and then I have it delivered in two days.

Or French mussels when they're in season, flown in chilled not frozen.

Actually, I have to correct myself. Tokyo stores sell almost everything.

LOOKING FOR REAL ARGAN OIL

However, I still haven't found a shop in Tokyo selling pure edible organic argan oil from Morocco, although I've found almost everything else.

It's easy to find cosmetic argan oil, but not edible argan oil. There's a big difference between the two, so please don't sprinkle cosmetic argan oil over a salad.

FIVE BOTTLES ON MY LAST TRIP
TO MOROCCO

So the last time I was in Morocco, last November, I bought five bottles of edible organic argan oil.

I like to create my own detox salad during the rare times that I'm actually eating at home without company, and this involves chopping up organic tomatoes, cucumbers, avocados and coriander, and drizzling argan oil over it.

For extra taste, I simply grind some French sea salt over the salad.

I love this salad, and sometimes I even have it for breakfast.

SALMON ON SOME INSPIRATION

After I watched Les Saveurs du Palais, I decided to invite some people for dinner the following night in Tokyo, and to make a choux farci au saumon, which is basically cabbage stuffed with salmon and spices.

This was incredibly delicious, and I was reminded of how good it is as it was featured in the movie Les Saveurs du Palais.

As for my friends in Tokyo, everyone enjoyed it on just another wonderful evening somewhere in the world, living a never-ending, and never-endingly eventful Travelife.
