Travelife dines with Matt Basile of AFC's "Rebel Without a Kitchen"

Travelife Magazine Managing Editor Ceia Ylagan recently dined with Matt Basile, of the Asian Food Channel's “Rebel Without A Kitchen” fame, to talk about Travel, and Life -- and, of course, Food.

Matt recently brought a taste of his global food truck creations to the Philippine shores.

REBEL WITH A PASSION

Ceia writes:  "It’s always admirable when one pursues a passion and makes it into his chosen vocation despite the challenges he faces. There’s a heady mix of risk taking and adrenaline rush, mingling with a handful or more of failures or missteps.

But when the risks finally pay off big time and everything falls into place, the fulfillment of realizing a dream becomes well worth the blood, sweat, and tears invested.

POPPING INTO THE FOOD BUSINESS

Matt Basile, a Toronto native, was a copywriter who had a fierce love for food.

It was the foodie streak in him that prompted him to chuck his copywriter job and jump into a “pop-up” food business that would take him all over his beloved city.

Matt said: “The food truck business wasn’t something we planned for. We started doing ‘pop-ups’ because that was all we could afford to do.” “A ‘pop-up,’ is basically taking a table in my car to different parts of Toronto selling food and using Twitter to tell people where we are.

As the demand for his fresh, street food concept grew, so did his following grow.

FOOD FROM A TRUCK

Matt explained: “The food truck was just a natural kind of growth. It just helped the operations and for brand visibility.”

This was three years ago.

Nowadays, Matt and his business (and life) partner have a thriving food truck (named Priscilla), catering, and restaurant business (Lisa Marie) in Toronto.

BECOMING FIDEL GASTRO

As the food business progressed, so did Matt’s reputation as “Fidel Gastro.”

Not long after, the Food Network offered him to host a show exploring North America’s culinary culture called, “Rebel Without A Kitchen.”

ABOUT "REBEL WITHOUT A KITCHEN"

“Rebel Without A Kitchen” Season 1 documented Fidel Gastro’s food adventures around Toronto.

To launch its second season on the Asian Food Channel, Matt visits Asia – specifically Singapore, Philippines, Malaysia and Indonesia – with a culinary tour called “Kitchen Revolution.”

“Kitchen Revolution” in Manila took off with a specially hosted Scotch whiskey pairing dinner by AFC and The Balvenie, a specially handcrafted range of single malt Scotch whiskies.

Chef Jessie Sinciongco’s own culinary team at Chef Jessie at the Rockwell Club graciously accommodated Matt and his team.

Ceia's Q&A with Matt Basile to follow soon.
