A six-hour fishing trip off Kanagawa and a fresh sashimi lunch with a shiatsu master



The other day, in Tokyo living a Travelife, I booked a shiatsu session with Murata-sensei, a shiatsu and acupuncture master who has been doing housecalls for me for over ten years.

When he isn't visiting clients for shiatsu and acupuncture, Murata-sensei is indulging in his biggest passion: going fishing.

FISHING IN MID-WINTER

Once, about five years ago, I actually got cajoled into joining him and a couple of other people on one of his fishing expeditions off the coast of Kanagawa.

This is about 90 minutes' drive from Tokyo without traffic.



It was the dead of winter, and the cold and I are simply and forever incompatible, so I must've been crazy when I said yes to this plan.

Being out in the sea in the middle of winter is about 20 times colder than being on land.

So off we all went on his boat, which was nice and surprisingly large, but it wasn't exactly a luxury yacht.

It's a boat made for dead-serious fishing enthusiasts, so it doesn't have a plush lounge or an entertainment room. Instead, the entire deck was basically open for living life outdoors and for hauling in the fish.

I spent six hours on the deck of this boat in freezing winter, trying to catch fish, not including the sailing time to get to the middle of the sea.

Thinking about it now, I don't think I'd be able to do this again.

But back then, I managed to survive six hours of mid-winter freezing with icy winds that made the temperatures plunge with every gust.

We also caught a lot of fish, which we brought back to someone's house afterwards, for the freshest sashimi lunch I've ever had, in my never-ending, and never-endingly eventful Travelife.
