Foodie heaven in Surabaya, Indonesia with tilapia and noodles for lunch

The other day in Surabaya, Indonesia, living a Travelife, we spent the day exploring the city -- which is Indonesia's second largest.

It's an interesting destination that's pretty much off the radar for most tourists, but there are a couple of things certainly worth visiting.

Last few days to get this issue at the bookstores...

HERITAGE OF A LOVELY CITY

I was especially entranced by a very well-preserved museum and a heritage hotel full of history and still largely untouched by the 21st century.

The bar of this hotel is something right out of a period film.

LUNCH LIKE THE LOCALS

For lunch, we decided to go very local.

So instead of heading for the restaurant of the best hotel in town, as I am most likely to usually do, we left the decision to our guide.

Some locals came to say goodbye to us...

He took us to a very ordinary-looking building. I did say "local" after all.

But when we entered the restaurant, what made me think twice was the fact that it was 1230 pm and there was absolutely no one around except a handful of sleepy-looking staff.

Oh no. This certainly didn't seem like a Travelife...

SURPRISE, SURPRISE

But as we were pressed for time, and I was intent on still going shopping afterwards, we decided to lie in the bed we made, figuratively, and just stick with the decision of the guide.

Wow, I am so glad we did.

The food was absolutely delicious.

We had deep-fried tilapia with green mango slices and a big dish of sweet noodles balanced out perfectly by a plate of hot chilies.

Prior to this visit, I hadn't been to Indonesia in a very long time, so I'd forgotten how good the food is.

And that certainly made just another day in my never-ending, and never-endingly eventful Travelife.
