The best eggs benedict in Cape Town is at the Alphen Hotel in Constantia



This morning, I woke up bright and fresh after close to nine hours of sleep in the Alphen Hotel, which is a beautiful property re-fashioned into a trendy "it" hotel out of a Cape Dutch estate in Constantia.

It was 9 AM when I woke up and a car was picking me up at 11 AM for the airport, so I headed out for breakfast as soon as I could.

THE PLACE TO BE ON A SUNDAY MORNING
IN CAPE TOWN

Wow, I was completely unprepared for what a happening place the breakfast restaurant of the Alphen Hotel was.

It's called the La Belle Cafe & Bakery.

And when I walked in, it was completely packed with upmarket diners who were nearby residents of the very posh neighborhoods of Constantia and its surroundings.

There were no tourists here except me.

EVERYONE'S CELEBRATING SOMETHING
AT THE ALPHEN HOTEL

Instead every table was full of groups of families and friends having leisurely breakfasts on a Sunday morning or else celebrating some special occasion.

No kidding.



Practically every table around me had a group with someone in that group celebrating a birthday.

And I knew this not because I was eavesdropping on their conversations, but because each of the birthday celebrants got a red velvet cupcake -- yum -- with vanilla icing and a birthday candle on top of it.

The staff even sang the happy birthday song to each one.

SEVENTH HEAVEN AT 9 AM

"Are these really all for you?" The lady asked.

As for me, I was in seventh heaven when I opened the menu.

The La Belle Cafe & Bakery had an entire listing devoted to raw juices, which is my breakfast of choice almost everywhere and anywhere in the world.

So, of course, I ordered every raw juice on the menu.

Then I saw eggs benedict on the menu as well, with the options of having it with ham or with salmon.

Of course I had to have this, as I almost never pass a breakfast menu with eggs benedict on it, without ordering this. This is my most favorite breakfast dish in the world, and it's literally the key to my heart.

I had the eggs benedict with smoked salmon. It was perfectly done -- I kid you not. Absolutely, most perfectly done. I would've hugged the chef if he had come out.

It also had a slightly sour taste, which I love.

MEMORIES OF FRANSCHHOEK

It brought back memories of a breakfast I had at the famous Le Quartier Francais in Franschhoek, almost exactly one year ago.

Franschhoek is about an hour's drive from where I was this morning, and one year ago, I had a very memorable and wonderful stay here.



THE EGGS BENEDICT AT LE QUARTIER FRANCAIS

The Travel Companion and I had a wonderful breakfast here, and the standouts in a beautiful breakfast were the sticky toffee pudding and the eggs benedict.

We liked the sticky toffee pudding so much that we took a box away with us, when we checked out of the hotel.

These were prepared by the equally famous chef Margot Janse of the Tasting Room, which is the restaurant of Le Quartier Francais.



This morning's eggs benedict certainly rivaled the eggs benedict that I had at Le Quartier Francais one year ago.

Both were equally lip-smackingly good.

And my medley of raw juices, plus this amazing eggs benedict, certainly provided a wonderful start to just another amazing day in my never-ending, and never-endingly eventful Travelife.
