The 2013 gala dinner of the Commanderie de Bordeaux at the Fairmont Hotel, featuring Chateau Montrose

Last night, in Manila living a Travelife, I attended the 2013 gala dinner of the Commanderie de Bordeaux, a small society of lovers of Bordeaux wine.

A strictly black-tie affair, this five-course dinner in the ballroom of the hotel was well-attended by members of the Commanderie de Bordeaux and their guests.

AN EVENING OF WINE & FOOD

Of course, it was a delicious evening made even nicer by the wines, which were all from the Chateau Montrose in Bordeaux.

The CEO of the Chateau Montrose was one of the guests last night as well.

HELPING VICTIMS OF TYPHOON YOLANDA

Over dinner, everyone talked about the disaster caused by Typhoon Yolanda in southern Philippines, and how they can help raise more money.

One of my friends, seated at the same table, is planning to host a gourmet burger cookout in the Fort one weekend, and 100% of the money raised will go to victims of Typhoon Yolanda.

AN AUCTION SET UP IN 24 HOURS

The Commanderie de Bordeaux also did its part last night for Typhoon Yolanda.

There was some talk of canceling this dinner, initially, because of the disaster; but too many people had flown in from abroad for this event, which had been set months ago.

Instead, members of the Commanderie de Bordeaux in the Philippines and in Hong Kong donated some pretty amazing wine for an auction that Commanderie Philippines grand maitre Gigi Montinola, together with Commanderie founding members Alex Lichaytoo, Edouard Miailhe and Bernie Sim, set up in a record 24 hours.

FUN AT AN AUCTION

The lively auction, hosted by Commanderie members Karen Davila and Kim Atienza, took place over dinner.

Everyone had a very good time egging each other to bid on the wines. At one point, Fernando Zobel bid for one of the bottles, and Karen Davila cried out: "Fernando, you need to bid on the more expensive bottles."

Everyone had a good laugh over this.

Mind you, everything was pricey as the donated wines were all rare finds, and members didn't mind paying over market rates for the typhoon victims and the fun of bidding.

I don't think any of the wines went for lower than PhP 50,000 last night.

PUT ON THE SPOT

At one point, Karen Davila, who was hosting the auction, looked at me and said: "Weren't you going to bid?"

She'd earlier pointed to the Dinner Companion, you see, who had then looked inquiringly at me, for some reason.

So I found myself saying: "Next bottle."

And now it was the turn for the next bottle, and Karen had remembered.

Unfortunately, we were at the latter part of the auction, with the very pricey wines, and the bidding price was already hovering at PhP 160,000 by then.

SAVED BY AN OLD FRIEND

Fortunately, a very old friend across the room raised his hand to bid, just in the nick of time, and I think he took home the bottle for over PhP 180,000. In fact he placed the highest bid for several very nice bottles that night.

The Commanderie de Bordeaux in Hong Kong also generously donated US $10,000 last night, to add to the funds being raised for the typhoon victims.

So all in all, over PhP 1.5 million was raised over the 2013 gala dinner of the Commanderie de Bordeaux Philippines last night, in just another wonderful evening in my never-ending, and never-endingly eventful Travelife.
