Tokyo has won the bid for the Olympics 2020!

Tokyo has beaten the beautiful cities of Madrid and Istanbul with its bid to host the 2020 Olympic Summer Games!

I'm really happy about this, and I can imagine that I'm going to be deluged with visitors from all over the world.

A ONCE IN A LIFETIME OPPORTUNITY FOR MANY

Asians will be particularly fortunate, because Japan is very accessible in terms of travel time for those who would like to experience the Olympic Games at least once in their life.

I think I'm going to have to turn my Tokyo home into a hotel for about three months....

BADLY NEEDED GOOD NEWS FOR TOKYO

From a practical perspective, this is very good for Tokyo as it will mean the Japanese government will pour investments and public spending into improving the infrastructure of Tokyo further.

Tokyo is a great city, but its infrastructure can certainly be better -- and the Summer Games of 2020 is the perfect catalyst.

TOKYO BEAT SOME GREAT CITIES

This decision, to choose Tokyo as the venue for the Olympics 2020, was made in Buenos Aires at 520 AM Tokyo time today. This was 420 AM in Manila and elsewhere in Southeast Asia.

Tokyo was chosen over Istanbul and Madrid -- two of my favorite cities.

Ironically I'm headed to both Istanbul and Madrid this weekend for another trip in my never-ending Travelife.

The Olympics 2016 will be in Brazil, and then Tokyo is up next.

Meanwhile the next set of Winter Olympics will be in Russia in 2014 and in South Korea in 2018.

A VERY WELCOME BOOST

Many Tokyo residents, needing a psychological boost after two decades of a recession made easier only by a couple of temporary economic booms, woke up early to watch the news of television.

Tokyo residents have really had a tough time these last 20 years -- plus there's been the terrible earthquake and also worries about the radiation effects from the Fukushima nuclear plant in northern Japan.

JOY ACROSS THE CITY

In some neighborhoods in Tokyo this morning, you could hear shouts and clapping at 520 AM when the decision was announced.

Quite a number of people burst into tears at the news.

I got goose bumps myself, when I heard that Tokyo had been selected over Istanbul and Madrid.

And then I went into "hostess/ hospitality mode," thinking about what to do when at least 100 friends visit me in seven years' time for one memorable summer in a never-ending, and never-endingly eventful Travelife.
