New Year's resolution for 2014. And how luck is always on our side.

My Tinsley dresses and I.M. Presa shawls are flying to Europe tonight...

New Year's Resolution 2014: to leave earlier for the airport.

Today I flew to Hong Kong to catch my flight to Europe.

As always, I tried to leave late, to avoid having to spend too much time in the airport. I'm on a plane almost every week, or every other week, and it's one after another airport lounge for me.

I left home two hours before my flight.

I usually arrive at the airport about an hour before my flight as there are no lines in business class and I can almost always go from driveway to airline lounge in about 20 minutes -- leaving me with another 20 minutes for last-minute emails and phone calls.

UNEXPECTED BUMPS IN LIFE

Then, because Makati CBD is quite close to the airport, I thought an hour for travel to the airport would be ample.

What I didn't count on was a huge traffic jam beginning from Resorts World all the way to the domestic airport. That added way too much time to my schedule, and for once in my life, I was seriously worried I would miss my flight.

Missing my flight to Hong Kong would mean missing my flight to Europe. That would certainly be a damper, and I don't know what my companions would have to say about that.

So in my mind I was already turning different scenarios over, while twiddling my thumbs and waiting for the traffic to break.

NEW YEAR'S RESOLUTION

"I really have to get to the airport earlier," I finally told myself.

All my friends know that I'm the last one to check in and the last one to board a plane.

There's really only one person who has succeeded in getting me to airports with lots of time to spare, and I'll bet he knows who he is.

With all my other friends, I always get my way and we usually end up leaving on my time.

NEVER MISSED A FLIGHT YET

Interestingly, I've never ever missed a flight yet, in spite of this breathtaking -- or more appropriately breathless -- schedule.

Although in Hyderabad, India last April, I certainly had a close call.

It was really the fault of the Park Hyatt Hyderabad, for being so comfortable and gorgeous. I just didn't want to leave.

"I want to spend as little time as possible in the airport," I said to my friend, Mr. Jaded, who had come along with me.

BREATHLESS IN INDIA

Well, when the hotel car pulled up to the airport, we got the shock of our lives when we found out that check-in for our flight to Ahmedabad had closed.

Well, it was 40 minutes before take-off after all.

Thankfully, the Park Hyatt Hyderabad on-site airport team had met us at the airport, and so I let them handle the airline staff and try to work around a closed check-in counter.

Mr. Jaded didn't say a thing. As for me, I was busy thinking of options in case we didn't get on this flight -- like taking the flight the next morning or flying ahead to Ahmedabad without our luggage.

LUCK IS ALWAYS ON OUR SIDE

Luck is really always on my side, for some happy reason.

Miraculously, the check-in counter opened and we got through, luggage and all.

It was only after we had cleared security and were near the boarding gate to get on our flight that Mr. Jaded spoke up.

In his usual dry humorous way, he said to me: "Well, you got your wish. As little time as possible at the airport."

Yes, I usually get my way, in my never-endingly eventful Travelife.

LOOKS LIKE WE MADE IT...

Today was no different.

I made my Hong Kong flight.

And the very last restaurant reservation in Spain that I was waiting for even came through just as I was about to take off.

Eureka.

And now here I am in Hong Kong, at the lounge, waiting for the flight to Europe, for another nice trip in my never-ending, and never-endingly eventful Travelife.
