Real ayurveda treatments at the Jetwing Ayurveda Pavilion in Sri Lanka (Part 1)

My king villa at the Jetwing Ayurveda Pavilion in Sri Lanka
Today, in Sri Lanka living a Travelife, I spent the entire afternoon at the Jetwing Ayurveda Pavilion for  a series of treatments.

I'm a big fan of ayurveda, and South India and Sri Lanka are two of the best places in the world to experience ayurveda.

THE BIG OPPORTUNITY

I've been to Sri Lanka about five times in the last 24 months or so, but this is my first time to do a proper ayurveda consultation here.

This takes quite a lot of time to experience properly, you see. And on my previous trips, I never had the time or I was always going with other people who could not so easily be dragged to an ayurveda clinic.

But this time, I deliberately flew ahead of our group of Travelife readers and friends, to Sri Lanka, so I could get two things off my never-ending bucket list: one is to experience proper Sri Lankan ayurveda, and the other is to stay at two beautiful hotels.

AYURVEDA, THE UPMARKET WAY

The ayurveda clinic reception area

Ayurveda is commonly practiced in Sri Lanka.

But for the finicky traveler like myself, there are only a few places where you can experience the real ayurveda and at the same time in an upmarket environment.

The real ayurveda is never really very luxurious, mind you.

So if you find one in a fancy hotel that's glistening with glamour, well, that's the tourist version. It's basically a spa with some ayurveda-inspired treatments.

LOOK FOR THE OLD-FASHIONED ATMOSPHERE

This was the ayurveda doctor's office

The real ayurveda clinic is well-used, old-fashioned, and almost slightly fraying at the edges.

I've been to some of the most upmarket genuine ayurveda spas in this part of the world, and they all have that same well-worn look.

THE JETWING AYURVEDA PAVILION

The Jetwing Ayurveda Pavilion is probably the best option for the international traveler.

The clinic is staffed by excellent ayurveda doctors, the treatments are all no-nonsense and effective, and the surroundings are as "luxurious" as you'll get for an ayurveda place.

You can stay at nearby hotels and come just for the day, or you can book your stay at the Jetwing Ayurveda Pavilion completely.

BEST OF BOTH WORLDS

Always wanting the best of all worlds, I booked a stay by the beach as I just love being next to the powerful Indian Ocean, and then I went to the Jetwing Ayurveda Pavilion on two consecutive days.

What a treat this was.

At the Jetwing Ayurveda Pavilion, I also got a "king villa" for the day so that I could have my treatments in the privacy of the villa itself, and I could also have a lovely place to relax and dress up.

It was large, well-appointed and very comfortable.

And today was one of the most pleasant days of the year in Sri Lanka, so it was cool and refreshing to get treatments done on my open-air balcony with a view of the garden.

At one point, I was lying on the bed in my ayurveda villa and it took lots of effort to actually get up. I could have so easily just fallen asleep and woken up the next morning already.

As for the consultation and treatment, oh my goodness.

I met a most impressive ayurveda doctor today. More on that in my next blog entry, living a never-ending, and never-endingly eventful Travelife.
