Great steaks and hamburgers at Oakwood Joy Nostalg's Oakroom until July 26.



My first lunch back in Manila last week, living a never-endingly eventful Travelife, was at Oakwood Joy Nostalg's Oakroom Restaurant & Bar.

Oakwood GM Rick Erdos and his deputy Igor Ruge were trying out their steaks for their promotional All-American Food and Wine Fest that began on June 17. It ends on July 26, so you still have a few weeks to try this out.




THE WINNING COMBINATION

Rick told me: "We've put together two of our bestsellers for this one: steaks and hamburgers. And the steaks we're serving are really good."

That was enough encouragement to prompt me to travel across town on my first day back in Manila, to have a very good steak washed down with very enjoyable wine.




FISH FOR LUNCH IN HONG KONG 
THE DAY BEFORE

The day before, I was in Hong Kong having lunch at the Michelin-starred Mandarin Grill.

I was a couple of seconds close to ordering a steak. However, at the last minute, I chose the very intriguing fish pie, which turned out to be an excellent decision.

The deconstructed fish pie that was served was truly delicious and interesting, and, as a bonus, I had my appetite for a steak the following day in Manila intact.

A CAREER CHANGE



Igor disappeared from the table suddenly. After a few minutes, he was back in a chef's apron.

I said to him: "You've obviously had a paradigm shift."



Igor then ushered us into the next room where he'd created a carving station with two different cuts of meat: a tenderloin, and a striploin.

Everything looked juicy and good, and I had no qualms about asking him for a very big slice. Life's too short to go easy on a good piece of steak.



NO GUILT ON A HUGE SUNDAE

For dessert, we each had Oakwood's famous sundae, which is a very large parfait glass filled with vanilla ice cream, whipped cream, and brownie chunks.

Everyone groaned, half with delight and half with despair over unwanted calories, as they were served.



As for me, I ate everything. It was delicious.

"This is my welcome back lunch," I said aloud, to justify the fact that I had eaten a very large steak and an equally sinful sundae.

It was certainly good to be home again, even just for a while, from a never-ending, and never-endingly eventful Travelife.
