Pysched for a Travelife trip to Sri Lanka soon

Today I finally got pysched about our upcoming Sri Lanka trip, leaving Manila on February 5 and returning on February 11.

Six nights door-to-door, and three fantastic and uncrowded UNESCO World Heritage sites, an unspoiled country and a very old culture.

A HARD HABIT TO BREAK

I should've been more excited far earlier about this truly interesting and unique trip to a destination so few people have ever been to -- and here I am on my 3rd trip in under 24 months.

But, that's how I am when I like a place by the way. I just keep going back.

So case in point.

As I type this out and talk about Sri Lanka, a few minutes ago I was actually shortlisting some new and extremely exciting places to visit in South Africa and on the African continent this year.

Africa, here I go again....see you sometime in 2013.

YOU CAN ONLY SEE TILL NEXT WEEK

As for getting excited about a trip, you probably can guess what happens in a never-ending Travelife.

I have a trip every two weeks or so, so it's essential to focus on the destination at hand to experience it fully and write about it well.

This means, though, that when you've got 18 to 24 trips a year, it's hard to see two or three trips down the road, although I certainly book lots of stuff 12 months in advance. I just book things, but I don't think about them until they're coming up soon.

"Compartmentalize everything" is my personal motto, so that it's one trip or one project at a time.

SRI LANKA, SEE YOU AGAIN SOON

And now Sri Lanka is just staring at me in the face, finally, after a pretty amazing two weeks in South Africa and a fun weekend in Hong Kong at year-end, plus the holiday season.

Actually, a few more trips might squeeze themselves in between now and Sri Lanka -- Iloilo is on the cards, for instance, and I'm thinking of going to a ryokan in Kyoto -- but my mind is now completely focused on Sri Lanka.

A GREAT TRIP WITH FUN PEOPLE

What a fun trip it's going to be.

I also found time (finally) to look at the list of people going, and I'm so glad that so many of my friends are coming along for a fun experience. Friends I've traveled with to the Czech Republic, Hokkaido, and even a repeat companion to Sri Lanka on a previous trip are coming along again.

How nice is that?

Moreover, Sri Lanka is still unexplored and pristine, so now's the time to go. It's like going to Cambodia and specifically to Angkor Wat 20 years ago. It won't be like this again. Not later this year or next year. And definitely not in two, three or five years.

A HUNDRED TEMPLES
AND NO ONE AROUND EXCEPT ME

When I used to visit Angkor Wat 20 years ago, there were no good hotels so I couldn't even stay overnight anywhere. And if you got sick, for some reason, you needed to be flown out because there wasn't even a medical doctor in the area.

Can you imagine how untouched it was then?

But I did lots of daytrips from Phnom Penh, and most days, I had all the temples to myself. You could walk the whole morning and not see anyone else, or at most just a backpacker or two. It was truly magical.

That's how the UNESCO World Heritage sites of Sri Lanka are right now.

ICING ON THE CAKE

And just to make things fun, of course, we're doing this the Travelife way.

What's the Travelife way? Nice hotels, good restaurants, a not very hectic schedule -- considering we have three UNESCO World Heritage sites and lots of shopping to do -- and excellent company.

Enough time to linger over dinner and sit by the sea at Sri Lanka's most famous hotel, if you want to.

So, what are you waiting for?

Start your 2013 with an amazing Travelife. We're closing this trip soon so make that call to Meg or Kat at Travelife if you want to join us....
