An enjoyable lunch and an amazing buffet at Sofitel Manila's Spiral

Today I braved the holiday traffic to cross town and have lunch with Chanelle Garvey, director of marketing at Sofitel, at the newly-reopened Spiral restaurant.

I'd been here before for the big and splashy opening party that featured singer Kevyn Lettau as entertainment, just before I'd left for South Africa. But you know how it is with opening parties, you never really get to taste the food or see the place because there's a crush of people around.

MAKING TIME FOR FRIENDS

Chanelle and I are both very busy -- I've just returned from a never-ending Travelife while she's on the way out for a holiday soon -- but I really made time to see her today and have a relaxing lunch.

This is one of my New Year's resolutions, you see, and I'm starting it early. I told myself that from now on, I'm going to make time for my friends and I'm not going to say things I don't mean. For example, the easiest thing to say to people is "Let's get together soon."

We all say this at one time or another, especially when we bump into people at parties or events.

SAYING IT AND MEANING IT

I'm pretty much a very straightforward person and I usually only say things I mean; but even I'm very guilty of saying "Let's get together soon" all the time, and then nothing ever comes out of it.

Until recently, I must've said this at least twice a day and the chances of actually getting together with one of those 60 people was something like 4 out of 60 -- basically one follow-through a week out of the dozens of opportunities.

MORE LUNCHES &
SAYING "LET'S GET TOGETHER" LESS

Spiral now has a proper Japanese yakitori bar

Since I resolved to only say this phrase and actually mean it, I've been doing good time seeing people. Of course this has meant that I'm having lunches out more and saying this phrase much less.

The French food came in individual serving dishes

This week alone, I've had lunch every day out with someone who I've exchanged a "let's get together soon" with. Either they have followed up on this, or I have. And I've been very good at keeping up my end of the deal.

The upside to this is that I've had more opportunities to relax and enjoy the company of some truly nice and interesting people.

WHAT A BUFFET

The ingredients bar for the noodle soup

It was also a great pleasure to have lunch at Spiral in Sofitel again. Today I had more time to see exactly what they were offering and, wow, this is one massive, amazing spread.

The Korean food display at Spiral

It's like the old Spiral buffet set-up, which was already the most impressive buffet in the country, but now it's infinitely better. They've added Korean food, Brazilian churrasco, a French oven set-up, a proper cheese room, and so much more.

SUCCUMBING TO TEMPTATION

Kare-kare, you are so hard to resist....

They also had kare-kare on the menu today, and I succumbed to the temptation of it. Kare-kare is one of those things that you know is so bad for you but you just can't help it -- at least that's how I feel, and so I actually haven't had a kare-kare in months. But today, I said: "It's Christmas. Life is short."

And with that, another day went pretty quickly in my never-ending, and never-endingly Travelife.
