Beautiful concert of Philippine love songs

The highly-esteemed Philippine Opera Company is presenting a truly enjoyable medley of Philippine love songs in a concert entitled Ang Bagong Harana from June 6 to 10 at the RCBC Plaza in Makati. For the benefit of foreign readers of this blog, let me explain that the word “harana” is a Tagalog word that connotes a traditional form of courtship in which a man woos a woman’s affection by singing love songs.

It's not often we get to experience great performances of Philippine culture in our town, so please join us for this wonderful labor of love: love songs from our past and present, as sung by some of the most highly-esteemed sopranos and tenors in the country, together with dances by the Ramon Obusan Folkoric Dance Group.

Ang Bagong Harana will integrate past, present, north, south, colonial, post-colonial experiences and put them into a revue where our whole souls will be the source of inspiration. The different suites shall mix old and new songs re-mixed, re-arranged and re-edited while talking about “who we are as Filipinos” and “where we have all come from.”

Ang Bagong Harana will showcase the best of all the Filipino songs from different music genres:

Anak Dalita
Nasaan Ka Irog
Madaling Araw
Hating Gabi
Gaano Ko Ikaw Kamahal
Ngayon at Kailanman
Penpen di Sarapen
Leron, Leron Sinta
Paano Kita Pasasalamatan
Sana’y Wala ng Wakas
Kahit Ika'y Panaginip Lang

Ang Bagong Harana features some of the Philippine theater’s most celebrated singers and dancers: Karla Gutierrez, Aizel Prietos, Charley Magalit, Janine Santos, Marian Santiago, Lawrence Jatayna, Jack Salud, Nazer Salcedo, Marvin Gayramon and Al Gatmaitan with the Ramon Obusan Folkloric Group.

This is directed by multi-awarded and Palanca winner Floy Quintos and musical arrangements are by multi-awarded composers and arrangers: Von de Guzman, Jessie Lasaten and Paulo Zarate.

Ang Bagong Harana is truly the musical journey every Filipino should take and all Filipinos should be proud of. It’s a production for every Filipino who wants to hear his or her very own ‘kundiman’ music amidst all other music genres, which are now perpetuating our local music scene.

This will also serve as a musical treat for foreigners as an initial step to immerse themselves in a truly authentic Filipino music environment with the hope of making them understand our country’s cultural and musical heritage.

It's a must-see for the Filipino youth -- Ang Bagong Harana will hopefully give them a better inkling of their Filipino identity and rich music heritage.

*The June 10 afternoon matinee
