As always, the food was excellent. There was Hainanese chicken rice, spicy laksa, deep-fried taro balls, and a whole assortment of Singaporean specialties. Of course, the most popular stations were the Hainanese chicken rice stations.
Even Singaporean Ambassador A. Selverajah was first to admit that Hainanese chicken rice is extremely popular in the Philippines. "Before getting posted to the Philippines, I called on my superior and asked him for any advice," the Ambassador recalled. "And one of the things he said was that I must always serve very good chicken rice at my home, because Filipinos love chicken rice."
It's true. I don't know very many Filipinos who don't like this dish. I myself made a beeline for the chicken rice station several times, in between greeting the various ambassadors and inviting them all to join us for Travelife Italy Night with Margarita Fores on September 8.
The Ambassador of Singapore was undoubtedly the most popular person in the room tonight, both as host of the event and the top dignitary of Singapore in the Philippines. Everyone wanted to greet him and shake his hand or give their congratulations.
I was talking to him with a group of people including Dusit Thani general manager Prateek Kumar and CATS Motors' boss Felix Ang, when another group of people got behind and lined up patiently to say hello to the ambassador. And behind them were still other people waiting their turn with the star of the evening.
"You'll have to excuse me," he said with a big smile. "But just tonight, I'm Angelina Jolie."
